Learn how researchers in psychology conduct their studies and better appreciate and critique the research presented in news media, in other courses, or in the psychological research literature.

Explore the statistical methods that psychologists use to summarize, display, and analyze their data, focusing on the conceptual level and the goals that statistical methods are intended to accomplish, rather than on the mechanics of doing the calculations.

Consider the important and fascinating questions about when it is and when it is not appropriate to make humans or other animals the subjects of scientific research, what kinds of protections must be ensured for them, and ethically appropriate approaches to the analysis and reporting of the results of that research.

Syllabus

Courses under this program:
Course 1: Qualitative Research in Psychology

In this course you will learn about the foundations of qualitative inquiry—and how it differs from quantitative research. You will gain practice in common qualitative traditions—like phenomenology and ethnography—and some of the methods they use, such as interviewing. You will gain the competence, confidence, and “know-how” to begin planning your very own qualitative study of a topic in psychology.

Course 2: Data Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences

How do statistics apply to your life and how can we use statistics to draw conclusions about the world? This course will provide you with an integrated and engaging online experience to explore statistics in the behavioral sciences.

Course 3: Quantitative Research Methods

Principles of research design important for obtaining reliable, valid results in psychological research are introduced, including practices for definition and measurement of variables, sampling of individuals from populations of interest, and myriad other factors. Ethical issues related to research are also explored, with thorough coverage of the rules, regulations, and expectations researchers must follow with the individuals they study and in analyzing and reporting their results.
