Overview

This short course will provide a hands-on introduction to statistics used in educational research and evaluation. Participants will learn statistical concepts, principles, and procedures by building Excel spreadsheets from scratch in a guided learning approach using short video-based tutorials. Examples of specific skills to be learned include scales of measurement, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, and the computation of the following: mean, mode, and median, standard deviation, z (standard) scores, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r), correlated-samples t test (i.e. dependent t test), independent-samples t test (i.e. independent t test), and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

The course is designed primarily for two audiences: 1) educational professionals who would like to be more informed about how to compute basic statistics and how to use them intelligently in their work; and 2) first-year doctoral students who want a short and friendly introduction (or brush up) to basic statistics before taking full graduate-level statistics courses. However, this course would be useful to anyone who wants a good, short, hands-on, friendly introduction to the most fundamental ideas of statistics in education.

This course was excellent. The professor obviously put a lot of time and effort into it and I was grateful to be able to learn so much so quickly. It's an extremely quick curve from the easy first module to the content of the final module, but choices had to be made about what should be included to make it worthwhile. I was appreciative of his choices.

Reading another review, I realised that an extra feature could be an "activity area" where there are extra problems and the students are encouraged to apply the course content by themselves. That other reviewer could have thought of how to improve the course (as is requested and welcomed by the professor) rather than just knocking it anonymously as they did here..

The course is about few statistics: standard deviation, z- scores, Pearson coefficient , t-test, and ANOVA. I don't know why it's called "Statistics in Education", there is nothing education-specific there, and it's not a coursera-like MOOC, but rather short demonstration of formulas in Excel. There is no actual homework, 1-2 quiz questions just to check if you saw the video, no project or data to work with.

Speaking about statistics in education: 909 people started this course, 109 completed. The instructor is proud to beat 7% avg, MOOC completion rate. But enrollment for average MOOC is 40,000 meaning that even with 7% completion rate 2,800 people (vs. 109) normally complete challenging college-like courses vs. few-minutes-of-work tutorial.
