Writing for Late Night (Live Online)

Overview

Every writing packet is different, because every show is different. This class will give you the tools to develop your comedic perspective and identify the tone, style, and voice of the show you’d like to write for. Each class will offer exercises to hone your own joke writing across different formats (such as monologue jokes, character/sketch bits, games, and more) and identify where your taste and the show’s taste align.

In addition, this class will cover topics like:

  • Quantity and quality (how throwing out jokes makes the ones you keep better)
  • Hard jokes (the difference between a joke you could perform, and one that will work when it is being read by a stranger)
  • Efficiency (what don’t you need?)
While there is no secret recipe to getting hired at a TV show, Henrik will speak to his personal experience being hired to write jokes for The Onion and Jon Stewart off of blind packet submissions and share what makes packets stand out. You will leave this class with a packet of your own developed over the weeks and specific to a show of your choosing.

Please Note:

  • Class may end between 9:30PM - 10:00 PM depending on the number of enrollments.
  • This class does not end In a class show.
  • Zoom link will be provided to enrolled students.
