Modern organizations of all kinds face unprecedented disruption and change, driven in part by the universal impacts of technology, globalization and extreme forms of capitalism that push for better performance in the face of greater competitive threat. While change happens to or threatens an enterprise, its managers routinely face a choice – calmly protect what has historically worked or embrace and drive change as the new leadership paradigm. This course assumes the latter as the only successful approach for positive long-term performance. It is designed as an advanced experience that requires students to bring together foundational concepts they have learned throughout their curriculum, especially leadership, organizational change, strategy, and innovation, and apply them to lead a hypothetical strategic change program. Students will, working in small teams, develop a strategic change plan that includes i) a rigorous diagnosis of their business and an articulation of a “burning platform” for change, ii) an innovative strategy, at the company as well as key functional levels, that is designed to drive improved performance, and iii) an implementation plan (financial, project and mobilization plans) that recognizes the importance of milestones, momentum and organizational interdependencies, engages the organization, puts structure, accountability and effective communication around strategic projects, and allows for iteration and improvement as the organization learns. Students will appreciate that change leadership is today’s standard of leadership and is relevant in any management role and in any type of organization.

  • Module 1: Change is universal and constant, and leading change is a key role of all managers across organisations, industries and levels
    • Understanding general disruptors of business, and the universality and constancy of change; change leadership is now the standard of leadership across organisations, industries and levels.
  • Module 2: Refresher of key knowledge and skills in Leadership and Organisational Change
    • Refresher of key knowledge and skills in Leadership and Organisational Change
  • Module 3: Refresher of key knowledge and skills in Strategy - Analysis, Insight and Innovation
    • Refresher of key knowledge and skills in Strategy - Analysis, Insight and Innovation
  • Module 4: The Leadership Project (LP) and Argos Case Study
    • Review of the importance of culture in leading change; introduction to the Leadership Project, assignment of project teams, and review of comprehensive program and related documents relating to the transformation of Argos Ltd
  • Module 5: LP Diagnosis and Case for Change
    • LP Diagnosis and Case for Change - Developing a common context for the challenges, opportunities and urgency. This module will focus on in-depth discussion of the LP Diagnosis, with each of three aspects of the Diagnosis reviewed in the three lessons.
  • Module 6: Strategic Planning for the LP
    • Strategic Planning for the LP. This module will focus on in-depth discussion of the LP Strategic Plan, with each of three aspects of the Strategic Plan reviewed in the three lessons.
  • Module 7: Implementation Planning, Mobilisation and Execution
    • Implementation Planning, Mobilisation and Execution. This module will focus on in-depth discussion of the LP Financial Plan, Project Plan and Mobilisation Deck in the three lessons.
  • Module 8: Effective Business Communication; Examples of Other Transformational Leadership Cases from Personal Experience
    • Effective Business Communication; Examples of Other Transformational Leadership Cases from Personal Experience; Final Paper, Board Deck and Presentation
  • Summative Course Assessment
    • This module contains the summative course assessment that has been designed to evaluate your understanding of the course material and assess your ability to apply the knowledge you have acquired throughout the course.
