Data Analytics for Insurance

Deakin University via FutureLearn Program

Overview

Today most professionals need to understand how to use data for decision-making in their chosen field, without being an expert in data analytics or data science.

On this microcredential, you’ll learn the fundamentals of data and its uses as well as key techniques to prepare, interrogate, and visualise data. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to identify useful and actionable insights to inform decision-making.

Through practical weekly activities, you’ll gain the skills to clean, prepare, and analyse data whilst exploring the broader context and ethics of data analysis. You’ll then learn how to apply these skills using an insurance industry dataset and use cases.

Learn how to conduct exploratory data analysis

Exploratory data analysis is a crucial first step to help identify general patterns in data. This microcredential will introduce you to the process to understand how to import and tidy raw data.

You’ll also learn common data transformations as part of an exploratory analysis, including fundamental statistical analysis, to help you gain deeper insights.

Develop advanced skills in diagnostic analysis

Moving onto more advanced techniques, you’ll unpack diagnostic analysis to help you understand the cause of trends in your data.

Through this exploration, you’ll be able to determine the ‘why’ behind your data patterns to help you discover actionable insights for data-driven decision-making.

Learn how to use Tableau for data communication

Tableau is a software and visual analytics platform that can help you use data to solve your business problems.

You’ll learn how to use Tableau to import and tidy data, create charts using interactive elements, and use key business metrics to prepare data dashboards and enhance data communication.

Understand how to incorporate storytelling within a business report

Ethical issues can arise when conducting data analysis using personal information.

On the final week of the microcredential, you’ll learn how to incorporate responsible storytelling within your business reports. This knowledge will help you ensure ethical and responsible business reporting through data storytelling.

How will the skills I learn help in my career?

This microcredential will help you develop job-ready and transferable skills such as knowing how to interrogate or ask questions for data insights, apply ethics of data in context, project management, and become aware of business process and analysis.

What’s more, you’ll have access to a dedicated Tableau student licence during your enrolment. After you successfully complete the microcredential, you’ll have continued access for up to 12 months from the date you joined. This enables you to deepen your data analysis and visualisation skills using a recognised industry-standard tool.

How will I be assessed?

You will need to complete a 1500-word report in which you communicate critical insights in relation to a provided scenario. You will also create an interactive Tableau dashboard.
