Overview

Mumbling, stumbling, worrying, trembling, sweating and fearing are the outcomes of the low delivery skills.

In this course, we are not going to teach you how to replicate the best bits and traits of the acknowledged speakers. Dumb replication of someone’s successful behavior may help you only to an extent. That extent is the situation. When you are facing a different context, a different situation such “skills” might not work at all.

Instead, we try to get to the core issues that stand behind the troubles with delivery and start honing your skills from there. Topics we are going to cover:

1) Preparation — how to deal with fear and anxiety
2) Voice, pace and gesture — how to speak, stand and move.
3) Getting live feedback — how to interact with the audience.
4) Taking Q&A and Improvisation

So don’t meddle, start the course and make your delivery better.

Syllabus

Part 1: Preparation
-This week is about preparation. Preparation is the key to dealing with anxiety and fear, various technical, semi-technical faults and live mistakes. We will cover the proper ways to rehearse, ways to deal with faults and mistakes.

Part 2: Voice
-This week is about key principles of delivery: how to spread attention between audience, yourself and material, how to visualize and feel in order to appear more passionate, how to do semi-warm-ups (if only needed) and how to speak with an audience.

Part 3: Contact
-This week is about the contact with your audience. Connection with the audience is the most important part of the delivery. No connection — you are talking to abyss, your message is lost. But there is no single ultimate indicator whether you have the connection or not. It is more like a cloud of small nonverbal and verbal signs: faces, gestures, smartphones, questions and so on. So you need to look for, decode and response to the feedback.

Part 4: Q&A
-This week is about Q&A and improvisation. Q&A’s are risky, because you can be caught off-guard and look stupid, but in the same time exciting — live demos are always more fun than screencasts; and important, because anyone can memorize a somebody else’s speech, but only the author can answer tough but valuable questions. So we are going to cover some basic dos and don’ts and then my proven algorithm of dealing with questions.

I think this course which is talking about the presentation skills is one of the most important courses that I have ever taken as it prepares you to different and difficult situations that might happen to you and provides you with the most suitable ways to act according to them one of the most important parts I can say is how to deal with

sudden problems that we may have during a presentation such as if laptop brokes down or your Mic isn't working in aproper way and gives you many ideas about how to deal with these situations and I think they are very useful ideas

Another important thing I think is how to deal with the question of your audience there are some difficult questions and how to deal with them the most important advice I that we should deal with the audience as afriend not to ignore their questions and try to answer all the questions this is a very useful information that I have gained from this course

Thank you.

I have learnt a lot. I will definitely apply in my work and share with people in my community. This is my first time getting to know about Coursera but I had a great time listening to videos, taking quizzes (my most favorite), completing my assignment and reviewing my classmates'works. Normally I find these work pretty boring and time-consuming, but this course has changed my view, my attitude and also my learning habits.

After the course I think that I do have a new hobby. I mean I know what to spend time for and value what the general public has offered me.

I actually start to enjoy giving presentation and speaking in the public. People say that they can see how much I enjoy it because excitement appears on my face and my voice, which is really great for my job.

Best wishes to the team.

Very interesting, useful, well-structured and motivating course! I will definitely recommend it to my colleagues :) This part of the course gives practical tips how to handle different situation which can occur during presentations. For example, how to handle fear of public speaking, how to be more confident while presenting, how to make your presentation more interesting and motivating, how to communicate with audience, how to answer uncomfortable questions or questions for which you don't have the answer.

After each week there is a practical task which helps you to memorize all the information better. Also you will check tasks of other participants which gives you the opportunity to see other people's opinion.

It has been an amazing experience so far learning about presentations and what makes presentations interesting as well as informative. The course taught me that presentation is an art and the more you practice it the better you get at it. Stage fear and anxiety is something that most people do not talk about but this course talked about ways to deal with factors that can affect the speaker in terms of his confidence and how can one deal with it. Finally to conclude I would like to say that I had a great time in learning with Mr. Alexi

An extraordinary course on how to improve or develop your presentation skills... A bunch of actionable techniques which you can start applying since day 1, not only on your presentations, but your lectures and even your daily interactions with people you need to communicate with. Alexei's work is impeccable, from the quality of the slides to the very picky additional materials which add a lot to the course.

No big thank you is enough to express how helpful this was for me.

Thanks for making this available for free to the world!

Very useful course. Speaking in public and doing presentations is a job that many of us are asked to do, but few people know how to do it. If we learn from other disciplines (for example: statistics, lab techniques, writing scientific articles...) why we do not receive any knowledge in presentation of our results? It is very useful to have this kind of professionals that tell us how to improve little things that at the end make a difference. Congratulations!!!

Alexei Kapterev presented the material in a very attractive manner with precise material. He delivered the whole course with amazing topics covering all aspects along with real life examples. As well, sharing the experiences of well known presenters and their tackles to issues was what made this course a great source of learning.

The course content was good. Whereas, the way of explaining was excellent.

Will be helpful in my professional career ahead.

Some tasks require a lot of thought, I had to take the quizzes again to make it work. However, it's just what tests my ability to comprehend correctly. So, it's necessary to make the most of each video and text material which are really great! Oh, and the creators of the course try to stay in touch by all means, in forums, Telegram, etc. Thumbs up!

Now I have realised how many useless videos I used to watch on youtube. I had heard of TED talks but never thought they can be of any practical use. Now not only I analyse them but other videos as well. I can detect speaker's mistakes, whether the material is relevant or not, etc. Thanks to this course!

I love the fact you can learn by watching TED videos and they are given on the spot here but the tasks are rather complicated. I have a different vision of things sometimes rather than Mr. Kapterev.

But the course is still satisfying, I liked the style of lessons and how simple it is to study there.
