Overview

Do you worry about the effects of climate change on nature?

On this course, you’ll learn you how the work of conservation biologists and study of ecosystems can help with conserving the world’s biodiversity. You’ll explore the impact of wind farms on populations of seabirds, and understand how the use of advanced techniques can be used to study different populations.

In Week 2, you’ll learn about ecosystems and how they’re influenced by human activity. You’ll use case studies to explore the reasons behind the bee decline across the world, and examine fish species in tropical seas to see at first-hand how climate change damages coral reefs.

The course is for anyone with a general interest in ecology and wildlife conservation but it will be particularly useful for students at high school who want to study conservation biology, zoology or biology at university level. The course is part of the Going to University collection and completing it can help improve your university application by broadening your understanding of wildlife conservation and developing your independent learning skills. The course can also be used as a teachers’ classroom enrichment resource.

This was a really engaging and enjoyable course with a diverse range of case studies from around the world. I learnt so much from the other course participants as well as from the course itself. It has certainly re-ignited my interest in ecology and wildlife conservation and I look forward to discovering and undertaking more courses.

It's an introduction to Wildlife Conservation and it is preferred for everyone to take this course and exams (of course).

Whilst this course does provide some good information, I think that the short length of this course does not allow for a fuller extent of the topic of Ecology and Wildlife Conservation to be explored- what about a case study of a particular ecosystem in need, or how it could be improved in terms of habitat health or the interactions of its occupants, etc? What is one to do in terms of invasive species? What are the pros and cons of in-situ vs. ex situ conservation? When is introducing species helpful? Some of these questions could have been touched upon... Don't get me wrong, it's good if you come in knowing absolutely nothing at all I guess, but I would rather recommend that FutureLearn users take the Open University's Introduction to Ecosystems when it is available on site, which lasts thrice as long, but is very digestible yet informative whilst also touching upon conservation matters. Unlike the latter, I was not compelled to upgrade this course and make it truly worth my while....

Ecology and wildlife conservation are critical issues for all of us because of the importance of biodiversity for human wellbeing. This short course provides a basic primer to appreciating and understanding ecology and wildlife conservation. It is easy to understand, and some complex concepts are introduced in ways that even people without strong background in the area may learn from.

There was vigorous discussion among the learners, but unfortunately no involvement of the educators in the discussion.

I recommend the course for anyone, especially kids and young people whose interest in ecology and wildlife conservation will be important for the future of planet earth.

I'm disappointed that you cannot complete the quiz and the course without payment.

For a short course there was quite a bit of new information in it. Learned about other countries' problems and steps to address that. Unfortunately couldn't get a solution for our inland bird vs. wind turbine problem. Enjoyed this class. How about addressing solar panel effects on air, land, and wildlife? We are beginning to move more heavily into solar. energy.

Great introductory course, allows you to dip your toe into the world of ecology and conservation. Engaging material and varied subject matter. I loved that the course encouraged you to go off and write longer case studies outside of the course material carrying out your research on chosen subjects. Would highly recommend.

It’s a good introduction to ecology and techniques to analyse data. Suitable for those interested in an undergrad course or just extending knowledge. As a Leeds resident it was great to look at case studies based around the city. As a teacher, it has given me some ideas to link into lessons.

Good course but could have been more general and covering more important aspects regarding overall environment rather than focusing on 2 topics which is not likely to help us into having relevant issues to be concerned.

Starting with understanding the moral and economic arguments, this course has been an eye-opening coverage of how ecosystems can be monitored and assessed for resistance and resilience to threats.

What I really liked about the course is the way it makes us reflect in a different way that I'm used to here in Brazil and going deeper into the topics in question. It's amazing.
