Overview

Your body is not only made up of human cells, but also by trillions of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Together they make up the human microbiome and have a tremendous impact on your health. For example, what you eat and drink impacts the gut microbes of the human gut microbiome.

In this course, you will learn how the human microbiome plays an important role in maintaining normal gut function, digesting certain nutrients, early life development, behavior and disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), obesity and diabetes. You will learn how to distinguish fact from fiction about the role of the gut microbiota in health and disease.

Today, important research topics focused on nutrition, health and ageing lay within the study of microbiota composition, function and applicability. This course will help health care professionals gain a basic academic understanding of the human microbiome and the impact on human health. You'll discover the latest academic insights about food fibers, added bacteria, probiotics and microbiology. This knowledge can be applied by health care professionals in their daily practice because gut health is a hot topic, not only among researchers, but especially for health care professionals and consumers alike. Many patients with allergic issues struggle with gut health. Emerging research is connecting an imbalance of the microbiota in the gut microbiome to multiple disease states, including allergies. When finishing this course, you will know about the latest acdemic insights and how to apply them in your daily work.

This course is excellent in giving basic information about microbiome. I study naturopathy in Paris. We study mainly the link between microbiome and food and life style. Through this course, I learn about the different kind of bacteria in the guts, the development of microbiome throughout life, etc. These knowledge are so useful to me. Thank you very much for the course. I am on the audit track because I do not need a certificate. But I appreciate very much your course as that help to disseminate this important information to many people.

Not the best course. The course feels sloppy, unacademic and lacks impact. Given Wageningen's reputation, I had expected better from them. Below an eleboration on my opinion: - Many small mistakes in the videos. In the videos about aging for example, often the ages were incorrect: 104-109 whist the...

This course was an overwhelming success in my mind. Coming from a background with little exposure to health, nutrition, and well science for that matter, I was a bit concerned when starting this course. I must say though, the way the course was structured drove my interest and my curiosity and the...

I enjoyed the knowledge aspect of this course and added to my basic level of understanding. I particularly enjoyed the aspect on early nutrition on gut microbiome development and its application to future overall health. The videos plus transcript made it easy to follow and you could come back to both at any time. The use of illustrations in the videos was clear, especially the Nutr family. Enabled both aural and visual learners to gain maximum knowledge. The practice questions were also useful. Having the additional information eg. diabetes, on the Verified course, added to my knowledge to apply in clinic. In Module 6, the industry application was interesting. The forum allowed for discussion with fellow students and course tutor. I found the exams frustrating as there were often 2 very similar and not always clear on notes re choices. I would recommend this course to other healthcare practitioners.

I had scant knowledge on this subject and I needed the basic information laid out in this course to build my understanding of the microbiome and the promising research coming out of this new field of study. With so much misinformation and sensationalized advertising about the human microbiome on social media, this course is providing important and timely information for me. I work with people living with type 2 diabetes and I hope the microbiome studies can lead to better outcomes. The last breakthrough in diabetes of all types was the discovery of insulin. I hope the microbiome studies lead us to the next big breakthrough.

I only decided to take the free version of the class, so my review doesn't encompass the full aspects of the class, however I still learned a great deal. This was my first nutrition class I have taken and I highly enjoyed it. I posses a BS in Biological sciences so some of the material I already knew, but the things is did not know the course was able to explain very well. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in Nutrition or gut health. The only thing I would have enjoyed more would have been more in depth information on the bacteria, however I understand this may be more of an introductory course. Thank you for providing this wonderful course for free for those of us who love to learn!

I am really enjoying to study human microbiome at edx. The videos you provide are clear enough to see, understand with subscript. This really helps me to understand what the lecture is saying about. A few questions below each module are good to check my understanding. And there is an answer with additional explanation for each question. This helps me a lot too. I joined first time this time. I wish if you could detail about each bacteria and medical/biological names, not just its name, it should be better understating for me. I sometimes ended up googling many biological words so it took me long to understand. In the end, I am having fun here learning to enhance my knowledge.

I loved the subject and the level of proficiency required was similar in what I have experienced in other university subjects even those attended on campus. However I found the lecturer hard to follow due to her accent and my ADHD and Dyslexia and found I had to listen to the videos more than once.

I also had to read and ponder the questions to fully understand what was being asked and got a couple wrong as I knew the answer but mis-read the question.

The test questions after each video was perfect for me as it helped me find my errors before the graded questions. All in all I really enjoyed it and would do another

I have found the information has been most beneficial to myself as an individual, and also as a nutritional educator and practitioner. I like the video and talk accompanied by the transcript. I can go back to both at any time. The theory matches the application and I have already been able to pass on new findings to clients and students. My only "complaint' is re online tests as in some areas I don't always agree with the answer (some can be subjective depending on phrasing) but as an online tutor myself, I know that this isn't always easy or possible to amend. I look forward to completing Module 6 and application information.

Explanation of topics is Excellent . I get more knowledge about Human microbiota and especially the role of Bifidobacteria in infants was my favorite one and learned more about role of probiotics , prebiotics and synbiotic. Some concept were new to me . I am pursuing undergraduate in Microbiology so this course tells me more about Human Microbiota and its infection/disease etc.

Explanation through the animation video is easy to learn new things, new topics , new concepts .

I am glad to completing this course and get a knowledge .

I want thank you to everyone for making this Course.

I had to this this course for one of my subjects at University. I like this course very much because it has been set up well to follow in short bits. That means that you can focus really well on what is said, because each individual subject isn't very long. Furthermore I like the way that the exercises are given after each lesson. That makes you just think one more time about what has just been said, and that clarifies for me what the most important things were about the lesson.

Thank you for the possibility to follow this great course, I will finish this soon and learned much about the microbiota.

Many thanks!

I really like this course but I do have problems with the questions. Sometimes I read the answers and there are new terms introduced which trow me of guard, or I feel like I know the answer but it's a trick question or something. For instance the question on the exam module 5 question 8. The video is very clear but the options are split so you have to pick and of course it's the wrong one. then the explanation is exact as the video so which one was the right answer?

this is very discouraging.

Some of the information in this course was interesting while some seemed irrelevant. It is helpful to have a background in biology in order to be able to understand some of the topics being discussed. Some information seem to have little context. For example, certain questions would be asked to see if you understood the concepts being presented, but not enough information was provided surrounding those ideas.

Overall, this course is a fairly decent introduction to the human microbiome.

The course was very useful and interesting. A lot of important, useful facts through an interesting way of lecturing. Also, discussions are good to exchange the knowledge, opinions with other colleagues. I would like that some aspects of this course in the future are put in new course because is a pity that the course like this is not further developed. I would particularly like one course regarding just probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics.

The course is very good and I recommend it to everyone interested in this aspect.

The course is very good for me as a practicing community nutritionist as it has broadened by scope of knowledge in current issues and reinforced my conviction in giving out certain nutrition messages to my clients.

However, there are a few portions of the course content that do not come out so clear to me. But usually after taking the ungraded tests, l am able to clarify some of them. The content is quite voluminous but it is worth going through.

Interesting and informative. Extremely easy to comprehend and follow and questions at the end of each module help you assess what you have just learned and your understanding

Not quite as detailed as I would like I would prefer more insight but it can be supplemented through the additional reading material That they give

Overall a highly recommended course

This course is things me things about my body that I didn't know existed. I'm happy to learn about microbiota and its role in our health. It really is serving as a great educational tool for me to be able to help others, too. I also appreciate the fact that they made it available as a free course for informational purposes. UDelft is really performing a great public service.

Important and informative course materials, research reports collections are unbelievable.

This admiring course for all human beings is equally important for maintaining excellent health. Most of the people enjoy the test and fill the stomach and least bother about health and consequences. If we can make awareness programs through mass digital media might be helpful.

I think the course is rather superficial. A lot is mentioned, but nothing really discussed in detail. I did not really gain new insights, and up till now (starting chapter 6) I didn't learn things I can use in my work as a weight consultant. The texts are unclear. And, I'm sorry to say, the presentation is awkward.
