Overview

Learn about the role of nutrition in relation to diseases of the circulatory system and diabetes, which are major causes of death worldwide. You'll learn about the etiology of heart attacks, type 2 diabetes, stroke, other forms of cardiovascular diseases and how often these occur worldwide. You will learn about biological modifiable risk factors, such as blood pressure, blood cholesterol and obesity, and how they impact these diseases in a different way.After completing this course you will also have gained adeeper insight in underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, such as insulin resistance, and the role of (epi)genetic factors.

Dieticians and doctors often get questions from their patients on what they can do to improve their health.In this course,part of the Professional Certificate Program Nutrition and Disease,you will learn about the interaction between nutrients, diets and cardiometabolic disease (heart disease and diabetes).

You'll learn about the current progress in nutrition and cardiometabolic disease research. You willlearn how cardiometabolic diseasescan be prevented on the population level through lifestyle and dietary modifications.

This course is especially valuable for professionals (in training) from various disciplines related to nutrition and health, e.g. nutritionists, epidemiologists, public health workers, physicians, health care professionals, health policy makers, nutrition educators, biologists, and food scientists.

Syllabus

Module 1 – Cardiometabolic Disease Risk
In this module you will be introduced to the different types of cardiometabolic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Furthermore both biological and environmental risk factors for these diseases such as age, blood pressure and physical exercise will be presented.

Module 2 – Role of diet – Prevention of Cardiometabolic Disease
The role of macronutrient and food intake in relation to cardiometabolic disease prevention will be presented in this module. You will gain knowledge about the importance and development of dietary guidelines for the prevention of disease.

Module 3 – Pathophysiology of Cardiometabolic Disease
Learn about the pathophysiology and processes that contribute to the development of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Amongst others, insulin resistance, adipose tissue, inflammation, blood lipids and ischemia and reperfusion injury will be discussed.

Module 4 – Molecular Aspects
In this module you will learn about genetic and epigenetic practices in relation to nutrition and cardiometabolic diseases including EWAS, GWAS, diet-gene interactions, DNA methylation and Mendelian Randomisation.

Module 5 – Nutritional Strategies to Reduce Cardiometabolic Diseases
This final module describes some directions for reducing the burden of cardiometabolic diseases. Several dietary patterns, the focus of future scientific research and actions of different stakeholders are discussed.

The Pros:

This course does not take the typical mainstream approach to nutrition and effects. It is quite updated and quotes a few great researchers.

The epigenetic part of the fourth module and gut microbiome are also great since they are up to date.

Th cons:

Even though some old dogmas are challenged a bit, there is still a lot of resistance to knew findings for EBM. Ketogenic diets are mentioned (a little) and their effect on weight loss, it seems there is still hesitation when going against old obsolete dogmas such as low salt intake an…

An important course for those who need to learn a lot about cardiovascular health. It is clear and well documented. Lots of scientific studies to explain the complexity of the different diseases that compose the cardiometabolic cluster. Interviews with renown scientists are a plus that greatly contribute to facilitate students in having a big picture of the problems studied.

Even the practices and the exams are intelligently structured for learners to acquire strong skills that will help them impact positively whatever their group of intresest: family, community, scientific, or at a public level. I feel blessed to have found this program at Wageningen University and Research. I think the course staff deserves a big "Thank you" for all the hard work behind this excellent course!

This was an amazing course for anyone interested in the role of nutrition in cardiometabolic disease. I have a background in food science and had a basic understanding of the role of diet and lifestyle in disease causation and prevention. This course expanded my knowledge by delving into the role of genetics and epigenetics as well as focusing in on issues like blood pressure regulation, blood lipids, the role of inflammation and inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, diabetes, microbiome etc.

I highly recommend this program for any healthcare provider, practitioner, nutritionist, dietician or anyone interested in the role of nutrition in heart disease, diabetes or other chronic diseases.

The course is so detailed, well structured and deep. The instructors are excellent and they have really put together an outstanding course to help clear all basics backed by on the most latest research as well as with key highlights of shortcomings and possible problems.

I highly recommend this course. I started out as a course auditor but now I'm going to apply for a verified certificate because this is that great - worth every second of the time I invested! Big cheers to the faculty for putting together this awesome course!

The course is comprehensive and very interesting. It introduces some students to new concepts and can also supplement the knowledge base of others. The variety of topics covered under the umbrella of nutrition, heart disease and diabetes have been presented well with the incremental videos - not too long, can keep my attention! I think the course would suit all types of people from health care professionals to political policy makers and budding researchers. Thank you and well done!

It is a very good course for nutrition professionals. It discusses pertinent issues about cardiometabollic diseases that are related to diet. It doesn't bore you so much with theory but gives practical information based on wholesome research. If you love facts like me, then l am certain you will love this course. However, if you subscribe to fadist ideas, then you will be disappointed. This is an evidence based course, and I have loved it.

This course taught me a lot about cardiometabolic diseases and the mechanism of these onset. Being a type 2 diabetic, I have been particularly interested in this disease and how to mitigate its negative effects; Epigenetics taught me, among other things, that I was born premature during the second world war in times of undernutrition and that I had a good chance of falling under the Barker hypothesis.

I really enjoyed this course a lot. My mother is diabetic, and my dad has had a couple of TIA's caused by an irregular heart rhythm. For that reason, this MOOC seemed like the perfect combination of things I wanted to learn about. Please keep making more of these!

My only tip would be to perhaps create a MOOC more focused on the individual, instead of the population, as this one is.

Excellent, but I think this course is too compliated, and has highly technical stuff, for ordinary folk. Yet it is not deep enough for professionals. The course is designed in a very smart way so ordinary folk can concentrate more on what they need for everyday life, and less on the deep stuff.

In all, it was very informative and truly enjoyable. Thank you very much.

Diet being the main source of energy in our body we should always be alert about our right intake and balanced food intake to prevent all metabolic as well as other type of diseases. Right pattern and balanced intake in our society will make our society healthy and obese free.rules should be applied on food which are unhealthy as well as dangerous.

I loved it! Very nice structured, very good teachers and very interesting information. At the start, you know exactly what will be expected. And the short videos are very informative and because of the length of the videos, you can watch them very concentrated. The texts between videos are also very nice to give some extra information.
