This PC is part the bundle MOOCs in aviation engineering that would be proposed by the aviation team of AAE, HK PolyU. The main purpose is to provide an easy-accessing and efficient way for students, engineers, and officers in aviation and related industries to have a broad understanding of the airport services in different status, to learn the knowledge about safety and reliability, as well as promoting AAE and PolyU on the excellence of aviation engineering related programmes and research. After the completion of this PC, it is expected to provide learners with systematic understanding about aviation industry, including air traffic control, air traffic flow management, airport management, facility planning, airport terminal efficiency of airport operations, the concepts of safety and reliability, and the strategies and methods to improve the safety and reliability in practices.
The uniqueness, market niche and PolyU’s edge of this project lie in the following aspects:
- The home department (AAE, HK PolyU) of this project team is the ONLY department in Hong Kong that provides systematic programmes of aviation engineering. It could provide extensive support for preparing the course materials and assistant on promoting the MOOC to specific industrial groups.
- Most of the aeronautical engineering programmes offered by universities (local and global) around the world do not include aviation management and engineering in their syllabus, PolyU is the only university in Hong Kong to offer related subjects. Therefore, this proposed project is unique and a niche area.
- Hong Kong is one of the biggest international air transport hubs around the world, who has complete and mature aviation industries. It not only could provide very attractive and first-hand industrial cases for delivering the MOOC, but also could provide geographical advantages for us to promote the MOOC to the world.
- The project team has conducted extensive search in different online platforms and found that there are no existing MOOCs related to the proposed topic, which means it is a very good opportunity and timing for us to seize the market. This course can also be a starting point for learners who would like to start their study in safety and reliability in various engineering field.
