Overview

JOIN US IN PERSON OR ONLINE! For almost fifty years, this activity has been the most thorough educational experience for practicing and training neurosurgeons. Founded in 1973 by Dr. Leonard Kranzler, this course was launched to provide a comprehensive and intensive review for residents preparing for their written boards, newly-established neurosurgeons preparing for their oral boards, and practicing neurosurgeons who want to ensure their diagnostic and surgical skills are current. Memorializing Dr. Kranzler's forty-year commitment to neurosurgical education, it is now hosted by Dr. Martin Herman and the University of Chicago. This activity provides a comprehensive review of all aspects of complex neurosurgery, neuroradiology, basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, neurology, neuro-ophthalmology, neurocritical care, neuro-anesthesia, vascular neurosurgery and stroke, spine neurosurgery (trauma, oncology, degenerative, infection), pediatric neurosurgery, tumor neurosurgery (including complex anatomy of skull base tumors, radiation and treatment of metastasis and seizures, pituitary surgery, vestibular surgery, and WHO tumor classifications), Parkinson's surgery, trigeminal neuralgia surgery, and pain surgery. Expert faculty present topics in a didactic and quiz format to facilitate engagement, knowledge gain, and critical thinking. Additionally, current advances in MRI and neuro-oncology are presented, as well as up-to-date results of evidenced-based studies in vascular neurosurgery. Sessions include up-to-date literature so participants can use the latest evidence-based medicine to guide their practice. It will provide participants with the knowledge to improve their practice and give them the skills to deliver the highest levels of patient care.

Syllabus

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Characterize how to integrate principles of neuropathology, neuroradiology, and neurology into the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical conditions;
  • Describe how knowledge of basic science and critical care can improve clinical and surgical practices;
  • Recognize pathological abnormalities relevant to neurosurgery;
  • Analyze the benefits and limitations of neurosurgical treatments;
  • Recognize the evidence-based principles associated with neurosurgery;
  • Illustrate how to treat vascular abnormalities, spinal pathology, adult and pediatric brain tumors, epilepsy, and pain;
