Overview

This activity will improve the quality of care provided by the nursing team and advanced practice providers caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease within the University of Chicago’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center through knowledge acquisition and interprofessional communication. This session will educate participants about current and emerging medical therapies to treat inflammatory bowel disease and discuss the benefits and contraindications of medication use. It will also cover therapy positioning and treatment practices.

Syllabus

After this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the role of medical therapy in IBD treatment;
  • State the assessments required for medication monitoring of patients with IBD;
  • Classify the mechanisms of action of each class of IBD medication;
  • Describe the utility of therapeutic drug monitoring and the rationale for dose escalation.
