The U.S. healthcare system is the costliest in the world; yet, while having some of the best healthcare in the world, there is room for improvement in both quality and cost. Value-based care (VBC) is a way to achieve value (i.e., better outcomes at lower cost) that is bi-partisan and is being embraced by both federal government and private-sector providers and health plans. VBC is a vastly different approach to delivering and paying for care that requires consumers/patients, providers, and health plans/insurers to make transformative changes.
This course describes the rationale for transitioning to VBC, provides a comprehensive description of the components of VBC, and reviews barriers to adoption and what practices are helping overcome these barriers. The course also takes a deeper dive into practical operational and information technology areas that can help accelerate adoption of VBC.
Texts: No purchase is required; Health IT and EHRs: Principles and Practice, Sixth Edition, by Margret Amatayakul, published by the American Health Information Management Association is recommended.
After taking this course, you will have a better understanding of VBC, will be able to apply practical tools to aid in transitioning to VBC, and will be prepared to keep up-to-date with the ever-changing landscape that is VBC.
