Teaching Young Learners Online

British Council via FutureLearn

Overview

Explore the practice and theory of online teaching

Many teachers have recently found themselves having to adapt quickly to dramatically different teaching contexts in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, which has resulted in widespread school, college, and university closures.

On this course from the British Council, you’ll explore online teaching in both theory and practice – how to plan accessible online lessons and assessments, what online safety looks like, and how best to build relationships with young learners.

You’ll come away understanding how to include and engage learners online, both in synchronous and asynchronous environments.

This course is for English language teachers, teaching young learners (5-17) in an online environment. Experience of teaching in online contexts is not essential and both experienced and novice online teachers will benefit.

While most of the context is based around English language learning, teachers of other subjects will also find the course valuable, as the principles of English language lesson planning apply to online teaching in general.

I'd already done the Teaching English Online course over a year ago and I thought I might go over most of the content again , but it turns out the contents have been really well put together, you never get bored, it covers all the relevant stuff you need to know, it continues to be engaging and I grow more and more confident and enthusiastic as I complete it. I took a face to face British Council course some years ago (The British Council Certificate for Teacher of English - many years ago, actually), and it was a great experience. When I saw this one, offered by the Council, I immediately registered and let me tell you: IT IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I am learning a lot (recalling the good all days) and I really feel the quality of the instructors and the way the course has been organized is, indeed, of the British Council kind of quality I was expecting to find. It is really difficult to apply for free to this kinds of courses in my country. And for that: I thank you. CONGRATULATIONS to all the staff.

I am new to online teaching/learning. Our Lead Educators : Claire Ross and Joshua Underwood did a remarkable and splendid task. They carried us throughout the program recognising that we were novices.
The engagement with other colleagues worldwide made the course a global village centre. Thanks to Future Learn /British Council.

Gains from the course: I am now comfortable and confident to conduct teaching online. The knowledge and skills I gained from the program were superb.

Well done Claire, Josh and all my colleagues on the course. Let us keep in touch sharing ideas and experiences.

I have already taken weeks 1 and 2 and ready to plunge into week 3
It has been rather demanding so far but also very rewarding
There is so much interesting information that I sometimes feel overwhelmed by it. I am not complaining! All to the contrary I am totally satisfied with everything I have come across
Next week I will start week 3 and I will also start enjoying my Winter Holidays at school in Argentina, so I am planning on not only moving forward but also on going back and retracing what I have learnt so far
I am downloading files, articles and all sort of great tips form other students to build a folder where I will collect all this wonderful information to re visit time and again
    Thank you!

I have a been a teacher for many years and taught different levels from Young learners to elderly therefore my comments are based on many years experience in the face-to-face classroom. Up to now, with all the information we have had access to and all the sharing that has gone on, I have learned new strategies, a lot about working on line, reviewed theory from experts and discovered very helpful new information . Thank you tutors for being so friendly and encouraging. Excelent quality materials. It´ll take some time to absorb all this information and resources as there are some ideas I know I can implement immediately but will need to access the others when I require it over time.

Having this opportunity at hand has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my carreer. The course structure, pace and timing have been ideal for me to keep motivated until the end. I almost finish it and I feel I have learn so much! Many of the resources have enlightened a path in which most of us, teachers, have not followed before- teaching online- cought us by surprise! I trully believe this course (free course!) will help me deal with whatever comes next in terms of how to teach my students at the institution I work at. The experts who have lead us all the way until now, are simply the best! For sure, I am not goint to forget what they have done fo all of us, for me!

    An excellent course!
Stimulating, refreshing and totally inspiring -it bounds along at a great pace giving the teacher so much food for thought. - I personally felt that I just didn't have enough hours in the day to digest all the fabulous materials and ideas.
Josh and Claire were perfect mentors combining their own experience with a gentle push in the right direction for all their participants! Despite being a mature and experienced teacher, this course really had me question my teaching philosophies and practice as well as provide me with a well-rounded knowledge of how to teach online successfully. Highly recommended!
