Overview

Discover the phenomenon of unbundling and how it affects higher education

Market forces and technology are changing the landscape of higher education. This course, a unique collaboration between two leading universities, explores one of the key changes in the context of global inequality: the unbundling of higher education.

You will learn about the concept of ‘unbundling’ and how the disaggregation of university degrees into component parts is affected by digital technology. You will explore the marketisation of higher education and investigate the implications of unbundling for not only the sector, but different stakeholder groups.

The research presented in this course will be useful to a wide range of stakeholders and senior decision makers within higher education. You might be a university manager, a strategist or head of a teaching and learning unit.

The course is also ideal for policy makers within governments, as the research has implications for education policy, and people interested in the future of higher education.

The course enhances one's in-depth understanding on an unbundling higher education landscape with growing market forces as well as the use of digital technologies. Such understanding empowers one to be more discerning with innovations and to always opt for those that are more inclusive and provide for equitable outcomes rather than exclusionary practices to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The timing of the course is also perfect during a time of Covid19 when many institutions are pivoting to emergency remote teaching and how desperation can lead many to enter into binding contracts with private education providers on a cost-sharing basis. A key takeaway is to weigh both the benefits and disadvantages of partnering with private providers during transitioning to online learning in order for learning to be still accessible as an affordable, good quality public good to all students.

I thought I was well informed on the topic but nevertheless have been able to sharpen my insights a lot. Definitions, different perspectives, facts. It leaves you with the realisation that we have to actively find solutions "how we can use unbundling for positive, democratic ways; And what we need to protect ourselves against." Production wise it's a simple MOOC, and do not expect to learn skills or do quizzes. The researchers present their findings, that's it. But that is really worthwhile for all involved in policy and strategy.

This a great course into the future of higher education. It offers a view of UK and SA education future and movement amongst universities to compensate for the reduced public funding and to generate revenue for certain ambitious programs.

There are a deep understanding and at lengths details in the concept of unbundling and digital education.

I recommend this course to anyone who is involved with strategic planning and Acadia affairs at universities.

Great job

Thank you

This is an interesting course that highlights drivers of change in HE in South Africa and in England. Definitions of unbundling and marketisation shaped my understanding of the role of public university. Well resources course with relevant examples. I really enjoyed case study videos from policy makers and university administrators from different countries.

The course covered the topic in depth, with a good number of excellent readings and video interviews as supplementary content. The course was well-organised and comprehensive despite only running for two weeks.
