This is a great introductory course introducing a rapidly emerging field. It is designed for a variety of learners --- current and future health care professionals, anyone interested in learning about the field of genetic counseling, and genetic counselors, who want to update their knowledge about their own practice.

This class covers the basics of Genetic Counseling. It explains a variety of challenges that genetic counselor experiences while communicating with patients. It covers the full process of counseling for various diseases through a variety of case studies. It is an engaging class, that will empower all types of learners in many ways.

Genetic technologies are sweeping across society all around the world. So, it is a class that is current and can help understand the implications of counseling that leads to testing and then counseling again to explain the unexpected test results! This class clearly explains the need for counseling before testing.

I recommend this class to anyone curious to learn about the basics of genetic counseling from the practitioners in this field.

This enjoyable course made me appreciate better, and in a more concrete manner, the art and science of genetic counselling. Concisely, this offering introduces the learner to the history and rationale that led to the emergence of the field, the hard and soft competencies/skills/knowledge required of genetic counsellors, the persistent and emerging issues and challenges in the discipline, and the future prospects of the practice. Currently, genetic counselling in my country is largely, if not entirely, within the context of heritable inborn errors of metabolism/IEMs (detected through the newborn screening program). Thus, it is great to find out through this course the recognized utility of the field around the world in helping patients and their families make sense of genetic information that may affect their health, across various medical specialties and beyond IEMs. I highly recommend this course to everyone in general but particularly to healthcare professionals who may be interested to tap into this field for referral purposes or to become practitioners themselves.
