Equitable Pathways for Post-Net-Zero CDR Obligations: Insights from IAM
Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal via YouTube
Overview
This webinar explores the critical challenges of equitably distributing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) obligations in the post-net-zero era. Discover how CDR serves dual purposes: offsetting residual emissions to achieve net-zero and reducing atmospheric CO₂ concentrations after net-zero to restore safer global temperatures. Learn why the second role of achieving net-negative emissions remains unavoidable for long-term climate stability, even as we work to minimize the first role through rapid decarbonization. Examine findings from recent integrated assessment modeling research that evaluates various CDR methods—including direct air capture, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and enhanced weathering—for Canada under different burden-sharing principles. Compare projected CDR growth rates with historical technology adoption patterns in Canada to gain practical insights for policy planning. Features expert presentations from University of Waterloo researchers Kasra Motlaghzadeh, Neil Craik, Vanessa Schweizer, and Juan Moreno-Cruz, with moderation by Wil Burns, Co-Director of the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal at American University. Part of the "Scrubbing the Skies" webinar series focused on scientific, technological, legal, political, and justice aspects of carbon dioxide removal.
