This course considers innovations throughout history identifying that very few innovative ideas are new; the vast majority take something that is already working and improve it, be it a product, service or process.

You’ll consider the development of an innovation that you are particularly interested in, and, through a short project, produce and share with other learners your interpretation of its history.

This course is part of the Going to University collection which has been specifically designed for students at schools and colleges. They provide a taster of undergraduate study at the University of Leeds and help students to decide which subject to study at university.

Completion of the courses will also enhance students’ university applications.

The courses can also be used as a teachers’ classroom enrichment resource.

Courses in this collection are also great for people that want an introduction in the specific subjects discussed in each course.

An interesting and well structured course, a good basic introduction to the subject.
The section of the course showing the inventions and innovations of Emily Cummins was an inspiration to anyone starting out with a vision to build a better world.
On a personal level I would have liked the course to stretch me further, it was somewhat basic for someone who has worked in technology. However considering the demographic the course was designed for, it provides an excellent introduction for anyone starting A levels or those intending to study design / technology at college or uni.

An interesting taster into innovation. It considers the different types of innovation, and offers a definition of the difference between creativity and innovation. An introduction is given into the work of the young and very successful serial innovator Emily Cummins. This is inspiring.
Having done another brief course in innovation, I would comment that this course does not delve into the methods that can be used to generate ideas and focus on a few.
It is a brief introduction. Obviously you would need a longer course to go into the subject deeper.

The course could be more comprehensive and analytic . It was like a starting one. Yet, thanks for preparing this course!

Incredible short course. I learned a lot type of innovation and how they are categorized the way that they are.

Even allowing for the fact that this course was designed for school leavers, I still found it disappointing. The 'innovations' described weren't really innovations - people have hung wet rags etc round perishables to keep them cool for a long time…

I would highly recommend this course. This course is a great introduction into innovation and really makes you think about all the great innovations throughout time. Lessons are mainly through videos which is great if you are a visual learner. I also really enjoyed being creative and doing my own research and work for the final assessment. It is also great to see other peoples thoughts and work, as well as being able to contribute to discussions.

A good idea for a course and just up my street. What a pity there were so few comments made on the course. One of the pleasures for me on a MOOC is the interaction with the other students. Perhaps the course was too short or too new or too near Christmas. I gave 4 stars because I reserve 5 stars for outstanding and the lack of comments was a disappointment to me. Given a bit more time and exposure perhaps this course will take off.

The course was very well presented and the course materials and web pages were all of a high standard.

I found the course to be very interesting and enjoyable.
