What is Adobe Lightroom?

Adobe Lightroom is a family of photo editing apps developed for photographers. Lightroom is both a library and a development tool that lets you edit, organize, store, and share your photos.

Lightroom also comes with a 7-day free trial, which you can avail from Adobe’s own website.

In this article, we’ll cover both Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, the specifications of which are given below.

Lightroom vs. Lightroom Classic

Lightroom (previously Lightroom CC) is Adobe’s cloud-centric photo service that works across multiple devices such as desktop, mobile, and web.

Lightroom Classic (previously Lightroom Classic CC) is Adobe’s desktop-based digital photography product where the files are stored locally on the hard drive.

According to your requirements, you can choose which Lightroom is right for you.

Why are Adobe Lightroom Skills Important?

As you know by now, Adobe Lightroom is a powerful app for both large file collection management and photo editing. There is a whole market on Lightroom presets that you can buy (or sell) from famous artists and photographers and apply to your work right away.

Learning Lightroom can be a valuable skill for photographers, content creators, influencers, and designers as this tool can be applied for creating professional looking edits for your photos, and improving your workflow.

On an average, the cost of editing a photo is around $90 per hour, and you can easily see freelancers charging $26 per photo on well-known platforms. As a freelance photographer, you can save up some money and develop your own style, or even sell your services online. If you are working for a company, now you know how valuable photo editing services are.

What is My Experience with Adobe Lightroom?

I have edited photos many times in Adobe Photoshop, and created animations in Adobe Flash. Intuitively, Adobe applications work in a very similar way (especially Photoshop), so understanding Lightroom is not that difficult.

Besides that, I am a Guided Project Instructor and a Beta Tester at Coursera, having tested many courses before they’re officially launched. I have taken over 50 online courses in various subjects.

My experience as an online learner and teacher has given me some perspective on what to look for in an online course. I used my experience to evaluate each course in this list.

Course Ranking Methodology

I built this ranking following the now tried-and-tested methodology I used in previous rankings (you can find them all here). It involves a three-step process:

  1. Research: I started by leveraging Class Central’s database with 100K online courses and 200K+ reviews. Then, I made a preliminary selection of 250+ Adobe Lightroom courses by rating, reviews, and bookmarks.
  2. Evaluate: I read through reviews on Class Central, Reddit, and course providers to understand what other learners thought about each course and combined it with my own experience as a learner.
  3. Select: Well-made courses were picked if they presented valuable and engaging content and they have to fit in a set of criteria and be ranked accordingly: comprehensive curriculum, release date, affordability, ratings and enrollments.

The end result is a unique selection of courses that combines a decade of Class Central data and my own experience as an online learner to try to get the best of both worlds. So far, I’ve spent more than 14 hours building this list, and I’ll continue to update it.
