Age of Jefferson

Written a year ago
I enjoyed the course very much. I am and have been a "fan" of Jefferson for about 25 years. It was interesting to get an deeper understanding of his views on a variety of topics. I thought Jefferson was one dimensional with regard to religion; being a deist and a destroyer of the bible. I learned he was much more of a religious person. His views on slaves intrigued me for his plan to set them free. I was not aware of that side of him. Overall, it was excellent!!!

Arab-Islamic History: From Tribes to Empires

Written a year ago
Very enlightening class. I learned a lot about the beginning and history of Islam. The course gave me insight about the various powers that controlled Islam through its development.

Magic in the Middle Ages

Written a year ago
Interesting course. Not what I expected, but I'm not sure what I expected. The 3rd unit with Godefried (?) on the topic of Arabic influence did not appeal to me. Accents were sometimes difficult to follow. i had to slow the speed to 75% to keep up.

Patrick Henry: Forgotten Founder

Written a year ago
I learned a lot about Patrick Henry. He was more that his famous quote. Mr. Ragosta (sp?) was very knowledgeable about Patrick Henry and wasn't reticent about pointed out that much of what Henry said in his speeches was written down from memory many years after he died. His role in the development of the US was more that I thought. It was an interesting and beneficial class.

Coexistence in Medieval Spain: Jews, Christians, and Muslims

Written a year ago
I dropped this course after the first lesson because it would not grade my quizzes. It requested me to upgrade from a free course to a paid course in order to be graded. i am not taking these courses to earn a certificate, bachelors, or masters degree.

i am 69 years old, have a BA in Business and Economics, and an MBA. I am taking these courses for the general knowledge in history--a passion of mine--for no other reason. Period.

Russian History: from Lenin to Putin

Written a year ago
Very interesting. The history and background of the Bolshevik revolution helps to explain why the Russian lifestyle is the way it is today. The secrets hidden to the outside world reveal a much more backward society since the revolution until today. Militarily they appeared to be a first world country while the rest of their culture was third world.

Arch of Titus: Rome and the Menorah

Written a year ago
This topic was fascinating. I thought it was only the history behind the arch, but soon realized it was much more. Studying history in black and white makes history plain. That's not how our ancestors saw their world. When color was added to the arch, it came alive. I had never viewed historical artifacts in that way before.

Organising an Empire: The Assyrian Way

Written a year ago
I really enjoyed this course.

My experience with Assyrian history is through the study of the Old Testament. This course corrected many misconceptions about the Assyrians, especial with regard to the reason for the re-population of conquered territories and the decline of the Assyrian Empire. This course would be beneficial whether or not one has any biblical knowledge about interaction between the Israel/Judah and Assyria.

The quizzes were just tough enough to challenge me. Great job.
