Professional Resilience: Building Skills to Thrive

Written 8 months ago
Learn the basic concepts of resilience. The concept of mindfulness, sleep, finding meaning in life. I certainly already know them actually.

What make me surprise is that the instructor stress the importance of external support and say the resilience is a social concept. Therefore, communication, problem solving and listening skills are also very important.

An eye opening course and suitable for beginner. The instructor also include a 4-week planner. You always have something to do after the course!

The certificate price is a little bit expensive considering it is a 2 week course and I have a little problem in verifying my identity (try several time and succeed anyway).

Leading Change: Go Beyond Gamification with Gameful Learning

Written 8 months ago
The course provide a good explanation on what is gameful learning and explain it in the context in school. And you will know why children will hate to learn in school.

Once you completed module 1 & 2, you can optionally choose 3 out of 5 of the options to complete the course.

I would say the options are mainly case discussion and some of them are quite long (option 5).

The final is a capstone to review your learning. From my point of view the capstone is targeted to educators or those already have jobs in educational settings. Not a general learner who just want to know more about gameful learning.

Educators will get some ideas about how and why to be gameful in the course.

Biohacking Your Brain's Health

Written 8 months ago
An eye-opening course! You will know how diet (insulin resistance actually), meditation, sleep and exercise affect your brain. And full of reference article.

Some of the points are controversy, for example, the instructor says there is some benefit on cognitive exercise. However, other psychologists may not agree with this point.

I hope the instructor can share more her personal stories in biohacking her brain.

Get Started with Online Learning

Most of the content of the course are common sense.

And the course aimed at introducing online learning. But you will only hear FutureLearn and Open University in the course.

Nothing mention about edX, coursera.

Too expensive for the certificate.

Learner should go to the Learning How to Learn course in Coursera.

Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Written 7 months ago
This course gives a good overview of the understanding of CBT. This course is not aimed at using CBT yourself, but rather introducing CBT to mentel health professional.

The resource materials include two websites about how to use CBT for yourself. You can go on with this after completing the course.

You can also google "5 Self-Help Strategies for Depression" if you want more self-help.

Nothing to complain but the platform, Canvas is not on the top notch compared to edX or Coursera.

No indicator on what you have completed. You have to remember yourself. The discussion forum is not user friendly enough.

First Nights - Beethoven's 9th Symphony and the 19th Century Orchestra

Written 7 months ago
It certainly gives a nice introduction of Beethoven Ninth Symphony.

I hope that more explanation can be given to the philosophical meaning of this symphony.

It includes a simple music theory course also. But, I have to admit that I can't understand all of the concepts layout.

The Science of Well-Being

Written 7 months ago
The course introduces you with some basic ideas of positive psychology. You are introduced in the knowledge in the first 6th weeks so it will be more cramped. The last 4 weeks require you to do a rewirement challenge and is more relaxed.

I learn something in this course and would like to dig deeper in the subject. The target of audience is students but the concept is suitable to adult.

Learning to Learn Online

Written 6 months ago
It serves an introduction to what is like is online learning. And if you want to know the difference between online and face-to-face learning.

The course has several webinars that you can join.

I learned understanding the function of LMS is also important in online learning. To be honest, I know there is a eportfolio in Canvas the first time. And access to it seems hidden.

The course is a very good introduction so far.

Introduction to Python for Data Science

Written 3 months ago
The course offered by DataCamp. It is easy to follow. The final exam is a bit long though. You can either follow the path or join other courses offered by DataCamp, which I also recommend.

Data Analysis: A Practical Introduction for Absolute Beginners

Written 2 months ago
The course is easy to follow and really aims at beginner.

I think they can introduce the concept of pivot table in this course because many labs question can be solved by using pivot table in one click.

It is useful for students to have exposure to this important concept rather than delaying it to later courses.

The Musculoskeletal System: The Science of Staying Active into Old Age

Written 2 months ago
This is class central top 50 and I would said the course is under my expectation.

Content:

1st week: What happens to your Musculoskeletal System when you get older. It tells you the bad things when you get older.

2nd week: The importance of exercise.

The above two week can be comparable to Coursera: Sit Less, Get Active. However, my personal opinion is that Coursera course has a better structure.

3rd week: nutritional way to improve musculoskeletal system. The opinion of Vitamin D is interesting. But the sharing videos are just boring and no need. The eatwell guide is useful.

The course is not bad but really don't match as a top 50 course. Consider the mindfulness course in FutureLearn, well-structured and great mentor support.

The mentor of this course just appear occasionally.

Chasing your Dream: How to End Procrastination and Get a Job You Love

Written 2 weeks ago
Many videos in the course are very inspiring actually.

The exercises may not be suitable for everyone to complete though. Some require you to have a large social network.

I try to do most of them and indeed have some benefit overall, such as knowing myself better, better use of my time etc...

Overall, it is a good course to understand and overcome your inner obstacles.
