Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects

Written 9 months ago
I found it very useful (I do wish it existed when I went to school). I didn't find overly time-consuming (I finished the main course in one week, while I'm still working in the optional final assignment). The mini-quizzes at the end of each video lecture helped a lot focus on the subject that was discussed, and in fact, the course stresses the need to quiz yourself often about the subject you are studying.

I will definitely take the follow-up course when I'm trough with my current ones.

Animal Behaviour and Welfare

Written 8 months ago
The course was helpful in providing in depth knowledge about the challenges of welfare and behavior in animals. I was already familiar with some concepts and finished it in a week, but I think it is useful also for people who are not in the veterinary field, but want to know "what's going on" with animal production and also gain self-awareness of the issues with their companion animals. Some contents may be upsetting though, so it is required some level of maturity in handling them.

Dog Emotion and Cognition

Written 8 months ago
Making references to studies on apes, human children and a few other species, the course explores some of the cognition capabilities of dog compared to other animals and to us, with an interesting insight on domestication and self domestication. While most the course content was interesting, however, I found quite annoying the continual shoving of the course author's book and site in the videos, especially since a few lecture (and quizzes) were dedicated exclusively to them as well. I also found some of lectures (as the one about dog aggression) fairly superficial, giving me the impression they were added as an afterthought.

I'm not unhappy to have taken this course, but it's not one I would recommend in a particular manner either.

EDIVET: Do you have what it takes to be a veterinarian?

Written 8 months ago
I took it out of curiosity, as I'm already in the profession, and I'm on the fence about the course. It provides a few introductory lectures about animal care, anatomy, clinical activity and history, which are fairly interesting, but I would have appreciated more if aspiring students would have been shown about some more difficult sides of the profession (the emotional investment in the patients, the ethical conflicts, the balance between animal welfare and owner's economic capabilities). This is a moment when there is a rising attention to vet issues as burnout, 'compassion fatigue', which all stem from the fact our profession is not all about animals.

All in all, it is a fun course and a bit of a self promotion from the hosting university (which is understandable and didn't influence my rating), but to me it doesn't deliver on the question: "Do you have what it takes to be a vet?"

The Truth About Cats and Dogs

Written 8 months ago
The course was helpful in giving an in-depth knowledge about cats and dogs needs and issues in our society and not only.

Despite being already familiar with some concepts, there was quite some new useful information in the course, which was also rich in additional material to look at things more closely.

I'm definitely recommending it to everyone.
