Otis College of Art and Design via Canvas Network

Overview

Art and Design Fundamentals will address basic art and design skills in drawing and composition, as well as principles of two-dimensional and human figure drawing. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice three-dimensional design and develop an art e-portfolio. This course is specifically designed for high school students interested in exploring their creativity and developing foundational skills in art and design with an eye toward possibly applying to college art/design programs.

Created by expert and passionate faculty from Otis College of Art and Design, the course will be organized into thematic modules, including perspective and color, light and shadow, materials and tools, line and shape, anatomy and expression, and invention and construction. All skill levels can participate in these sessions and are welcome.

Students should be curious, flexible, and willing to experiment. Basic computer skills such as being able to attach documents and navigate a website are helpful. Students should also have access to a camera or scanner to share work.

This is a course I'm taking right now. It is very practical and includes lots of informative videos created by OTIS staff, where drawing techniques, principles of drawing figures, portraits, objects and still lifes are very clearly explained. I love the variety of assignments that help me learn to actually see things, and not just draw what I THINK I see. The instructor is not only an expert, but he is also a very friendly person who comments on students' work and offers suggestions. In my view, it's an excellent course for anyone (not just for high school students, as there are also study groups for art teachers and "curious learners" of any age).

Aana completed this course, spending 5 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be easy.

Quality presentations, good staff, pleasant atmosphere. Despite the name, this course is designed in such way that even "older professionals" can take part in (to refresh the knowledge, to polish the skills, etc.). Enjoyed it very much.
