3.091x: Introduction to Solid State Chemistry

3.091x is a first-year course where chemical principles are explained by examination of the properties of materials. The electronic structure and chemical bonding of materials is related to applications and engineering systems throughout the course. The on-campus version of the course has been taught for over thirty five years and is one of the largest classes at MIT. The class will cover the relationship between electronic structure, chemical bonding, and atomic order, and characterization of atomic arrangements in crystalline and amorphous solids: metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers (including proteins). There will be topical coverage of organic chemistry, solution chemistry, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, biochemistry, chemical kinetics, diffusion, and phase diagrams. Examples will be drawn from industrial practice (including the environmental impact of chemical processes), from energy generation and storage (e.g. batteries and fuel cells), and from emerging technologies (e.g. photonic and biomedical devices).     An excellent course. Quite long but very complete. You develop an intuition for solids and start to connect the microscopic world with the macroscopic behavior of materials. This course motivates you to make experiments at home with whatever material you have in household. The staff answers to many of your questions. What is wonderful, the professor himself often answers and explains the questions of students online.

    Very complete understanding of the basis of the chemistry and the physics of the chemistry, all condensed in one semester. There are lots of exercises, useful calculations, and predictions of material properties, such as transparency, mechanical characteristics, elasticity, plasticity, and conductivity. Understanding of the classical physics is enough to follow this course.

    All edX courses are of high quality, and this is no exception. It fixed some of the interface issues that were a problem with the earlier circuits course. All the material was on time and the staff was responsive. Unfortunately, I felt not as much effort was put into this course compared to the earlier circuits course (I gave it 5 stars, and this one 4 stars). The lectures were already recorded from class instead of mostly new lectures (as in the circuits course), and the homework and exams really needed a bit more work. The exams and homework had some questions that were vague, or simply wrong. They had to correct the final while it was live. In summary, this course was good, but just not great.

    This class is not as easy as it sounds - learning about the property of materials from the chemical/physical structure.
    Origially I had thought, that it would be a more descriptive approach, but up untill now (3rd week), it is 98% physics and making difficult calculations.
    Good brain gymnastics though.
    You have to keep up from the start, for it will be difficult if you read the material last minute.
    They will go through the material rather fast and you will have to study independantly to grasp all of it. I do not think it will suffice just to watch the lectures.
