Banking & Financial Intermediation: Concepts, Risks, Capital & Regulation

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore via edX

Overview

This course, part of the Professional Certificate Program ‘Risk Management in Banking and Financial Markets’, will help you understand the theories and the macroeconomic context governing banking and financial intermediation as well as measures to manage credit risk, off-balance sheet risk, operational risk, liquidity risk and solvency risk, including Basel guidelines on capital adequacy.

Banks and other financial intermediaries make up a large part of the ‘ecosystem’ that channelizes money from those who have it (i.e. savers/investors) to those who need it (i.e. borrowers). Central Banks in most countries also use that ecosystem to effectively manage money supply (liquidity) and to safeguard the stability of the financial system.

This course will look at the products and services offered by banks and financial intermediaries and the significant complexities and risks they encounter in conducting their business in a globally interconnected world.

It will address in detail the embedded risks in banking and financial intermediation such as credit risk, off-balance sheet risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, solvency risk, etc., and how these risks are identified, measured and managed, using several risk mitigation techniques and regulatory mechanisms.

This course is part of IIMBx's Professional Certificate program ‘Risk Management in Banking and Financial Markets’.

The course was in a very structured way. Right after each topic in the course, there were some questions related to the topic which was very helpful. However, the answer to some numerical problems with a complete step by step solution would have more appreciable.

This course is very useful for those learners who want to go deep in the area of financial market. This course basically tells us about banking and financial system and the sensitivity of the financial market. Further this course, tells about concepts of demand and supply of money and including risks and how these activity are regulated. This course has more and huge knowledge base as it's seem to be. Additional reading is recommended and optional but as of my suggestion, everyone should go through these reading to enhance their learning. The summery part is very useful to all learners so that they can easily summarize the weeks.

The course provided a comprehensive overview on the financial risks and regulations that govern to maintain acceptable levels of risk and capital each institution must take on. The concepts presented in this course are very important to be understood by professionals who are currently working in the financial industry, as well as to those students who are aspiring to be part of the financial industry workforce. The course is highly recommendable as the videos, materials and additional resources are created/collated to provide easy-to-understand yet in depth lectures on risk and capital management.

Instructor PC Narayan has done an exceptional job at distilling the sophisticated concepts of banking and financial markets into bite-sized videos that are easy to understand. The provision of additional reading materials and ungraded quiz were also helpful in increasing my understanding towards the lesson.

In terms of improvement, I would suggest that the course provide, in pdf, all of the spreadsheet examples for the convenience of the students to review those quantitative examples.

It is a great learning experience imparted by IIMB. It would be great IIMBx can launch post graduate courses in finance (Credit Eligible) through online mode available to Learners outside India. If foreign universities can provide online education across the world. Why IIMB is lagging behind in the educational market.
