Since the introduction of mass production, the concept of “quality” has evolved from simple assembly line inspections to a broad approach to production and management involving an entire corporation. Quality has become a critical driver for long-term success through continuous process improvement and customer satisfaction. Quality Management today concerns the entire value chain, encompassing multi-tiered supplier networks and customer service and returns.
This business and management course balances the quantitative elements of quality engineering with a managerial approach to using quality in an organization to effect change. We cover the statistical basics needed for a Six-Sigma Green Belt certification, following the well-known process-improvement cycle: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. The most important quality methods and techniques are taught, including sampling, statistical process control, process capability, regression analysis, and design of experiments. Quality management is examined, from the viewpoint of quality incorporated into product design, measuring and controlling quality in production and improving quality, using interactive, guided projects and case studies. The course closes with the presentation of a full Six-Sigma project.
The contents of this course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding TUM class (Quality Engineering and Management) and will enable you to immediately understand and apply quality concepts in your work and research.
WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
Quality issues appear everywhere and affect the entire organisation.
You'll quickly master quality concepts so that you can apply quality tools and drive quality programs within your own organisation.
You'll gain the fundamentals for a Six-Sigma Green Belt in a manageable and positive learning environment, along with the chance to discuss with staff and fellow learners worldwide.
completed this course, spending 3 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be medium.

Student Comments from the 2016 run:
On the eve of the closure of the course, I express my heartiest gratitude and thankfulness to all team members who structured this wonderful course. This is not one of the best course but THE BEST course in the world amongst all MOOCs on Six Sigma. Specially my gratitude to Dr. Holly for her wonderful presentation & prompt response during interactions. I have completed the same course from ALISON and Open Learning also but absolutely no comparison of these courses with this edX course. The course contents, presentations, videos, handouts and case studies were excellent. Even MINITAB which is considered impossible to understand without class room was explained in very easy to understand method.
The course is must for all professionals involved in Quality functions.
My heartiest thanks and gratitude,
This course is a must for all quality professionals. The instructors did a good job in explaining the statistical concepts. The course contains good cases and we are taught show to apply the concepts. Good work guys.
one of the best course on six sigma that a is currently available.Instructors are splendid and special salute to holly Ott madam
The course content, instructor and provider were all of the quality assurance standard required for the course Fundamentals of Six Sigma: Quality Engineering and Management certification.
This course was well ordered and provided excellent and thorough instruction. The instructors where concise and clear in teaching. The homework questions were ample and gradually increased in difficulty making it easy to learn the concept.
Overall an excellent course!
This course provided a lot information about Quality Management not only at industry but also at other sides like research. It's a great choice if you want to learn more about Quality (in particular, DMAIC methodology)
Brilliant Course. it is a very good start for quality management
Many thanks to all team specially Prof Holly Ott
Right from the start, it was apparent that Six Sigma overlapped my existing role and that applying it offered significant benefits. Since completing the course, I've been trying to "sell" this to my colleagues who have asked me to prepare a presentation on what I've learnt.
If you want to know more about Six Sigma, I would definitely recommend this course.
The Course is handy and helpful. If there is a person in the world who appreciates the course 100%, I am the first one to appreciate though I have not completed it. All material is excellent. The people who say its to easy and straight forward do not no what they are saying. People want to see things complicated for them to take it as worth while but when something is made easy it makes even easy to understand and that's what the lecturers have done. I am definitely retaking this course. I am teaching Quality Assurance in Zambia.
Dear MOOC team, Hereby I would like to thank you for the great job you have done to develop and introduce "6 Sigma" course! I am absolutely delighted with this course, and I enjoyed every day following the one refreshing my knowledge in statistics and getting new information about DMAIC process. I would like to express my respect to Dr. Ott for delivering sophisticated theory in easy way, and many compliments to your team for developing nice and interesting practical assignments with examples from everyday life. It was a pleasure for follow the course. I wish you a lot of success in your professional life, and it would be great to see new couses developed by your team! Sincerely yours, Anastasia Oskina
Dear qemx team:
I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you. I took Fundamentals of Six-Sigma: Quality Engineering and Management. The course ended September 01, 2016. I will use the knowledge acquired in this course, to link to innovation and change management. All together, will help me to draw all of my experience and bring the whole knowledge to my consultancy services. I do hope that in the near future, I will be able to train people and seek opportunities in consultancy to turn this new skills into an exiting career as consultant in innovation and change management. This new skill, will help me to achieve new goals.
All the best, and thank you so much for this opportunity.
Greetings from Tumbaco, Ecuador
I think this course is a great starting point for anyone who aim at working in the quality management field. The pace of the course is medium and the different deadlines are set off quite far away from when the problems are available which I appreciate a lot since it gives you the time needed even if you have a life to manage at the same time.
TUM have done a great work to provide examples, interactive graphics and many different case studies. I feel I could start a study myself after having finished this course. Well done, all of you!
The course was perfect for me. I worked my way into Quality after starting my career in chemistry. I had many on the job in-house training, training at conferences and software to help do my work in quality. This course gave me the insight on how the quality concepts work. Professor Holly Ott is awesome. Professor Grunow is great also.
This course is really fantastic in one word for having general knowledge of Quality Engineering and Management in details.
I am enjoying the course and we have very knowledgeable and skilled instructors who patiently walk us through the courses. The home works are very interactive and enables us practicalise on what we have learnt
The course, as a whole was good in content and was well taught. The methods used to make the concepts clear to the students were simply plausible. It would have been lot better if the green belt certification would have been provided online.Thank You.
Student Comments from 2015 run:
…Thanks for the good work. You made the entire course easy to understand and relate to practical application!
…I really appreciate the effort of the team for answering personally our queries, it means that you are giving time to check the courses….
…Thank-you for making this course happen. I was hesitated when I enrolled in this course, I thought I might never be able to finish it. Now I got 88% passing grade from this course and filled with confidence that I could learn and solve statistic problems just as those math studetns. Sincemy childhood, I was told I am not good at math, and I should stick with art. This online course offered a great opportunity to me as I didn’t have a chance before to learn this subject in a physical classroom as I would wished. And the structure of this course is good too, it allow me to start from the scratch of this subject and build up my knowledge along the course progress….
I am acting as the Chairman of the Israel Society for Quality. I took this course because I was curious how this quality topic is presented by TUM School of Management on MOOC.
The bottom line is: Excellent!!
This was an outstanding offering on EdX. I commend all the team efforts which were enthusiastic, zealous, a true commitment and real professionalism. This type of course usually require an interactive mode but your team has made it all the way asynchronous online offering backed up by immediate follow up, personal interest and responses notwithstanding it was more of a complementary offering. Hats off to you and your team! for this wonderful course that I really enjoyed and had a great image of TUM school at Technische Universtiy. In terms of quality management, I’m now a delighted customer and referral for students to pursue a higher degree program at TUM school.
I am humbled by the generosity from the “Course Team” in delivering such a high quality course. I have learned much from “Quality Engineering and Management”, and is sure, that I will be able to apply its contents such as Cpk and DOE to work situations.
I just wanted to say thank you to the team for all their efforts in teaching us, and thank you to Dr. Martin Grunwo and his Staff at TUM for making this course possible. The course is very helpful, I really appreciate all your efforts, your time and considerations for giving us this practical and amazing course.
This is my first course in edX and it has been a great experience. I want to highlight the clarity and organisatino in the way the course material was presented.
and the effort Holly and the team put in the course, answering our questions…
Thank you to the team for providing excellent course materials and lectures. Quality Engineering and Management is my first course in Edx and it has truly been a wonderful experience.
The course was beyond my expectations, content, pedagogy and methodology are excellent, with interactive and practical exercises becomes easier to learn, the patience of the team is commendable, I now understand the famous phrase: “German perfection.”
This course has definitely blown away my expectations and expanded my way of thinking toward engineering problems. I only wish I took this course before I took Probability and Statistics in undgrad.
It was great pleasure to take this course. Everything was excellent the quick answers and all discussion gave me more than I expected.
Finally, statistics and 6 Sigma makes a lot more sense! I’d like to express my appreciation to the entire Course Team, TUM and Edx for offering this great course. I’ve heard a lot about 6 sigma and even got close to somehow understanding what it means. But QEMx has taken my breath away. The background statistical concepts have been well demonstrated and related with practical situations. I had my first real understanding of inferential statistics with this course.
Thank you, I’m amazed!! This knowledge help me in my business. It’s a financial, and I’m making some changes in several processes…
I loved this course!! Thank you…!!
This knowledge help me in my work profile. and I’m making some change in several process an its works so efficiently.. I requested to you and edX about pleas uploaded some six sigma courses. I loved this coure!! Thank you TUM!! Thank you edX!!
Congratulations to the TUM team and EDX for delivering an amazing learning experience! I am deeply grateful for the tremendous effort put forth by your teams to make this course available online. You have helped so many students from around the world to succeed with our challenging process improvement endeavors. It happens that this course coincides with a project that I am involved with at my company’s newest manufacturing facility. I credit this course for being able to speak “the language of quality” with our technical staff and equipment vendor. The practical application of your course is truly priceless.
Thank you very much for this brilliant course, much appreciated this course and was one of the best offered by edX. The feedback given by the teachers was unmatched and great.
I just want to thank TUM and the course team for this outstanding course. It has been a wonderful journey and I have enjoyed every step of the way. I have learned lot more than I expected and I have started to apply the knowledge in my work. As a by-product I gained a renewed interests in statistics that I have already started to explore in other edX courses. Thank you.
Very good course, interesting and structured approach, well explained topics, good discussion forum, a helpful team eager to solve questions in a short time…
I want to express my hearty thanks to the team that have brought this course to edx and to the lecturers. I really enjoyed the class an the information supplied were more than enough for complete knowledge on understanding quality management and engineering. I just currently started working as the quality control technician leand and this has upped my knowledge a lot.
I’ve just finished the course and I want to thanks for all the equipment. I have to confess I don't like statistics but the course show me that is useful in quality so I started to love it.
Thanks a lot for these powerful lessons through out the course. I really learnt a lot and enjoyed every lesson!
completed this course, spending 2 hours a week on it and found the course difficulty to be very easy.

"thx for the certificate -and mocking EDX as a serious platform where one can learn some useful stuff and gets valuable credential for doing so, mocking serious (=real) Black (Green and even Yellow) Belts by presenting the flattest DMAIC course I've ever seen anywhere -and I saw a lot. The TUM seems to be out to discredit if not affront the whole Quality business together with EDX with this crap. I would recommend everybody serious about Quality engineering and SS to get his even entry SS stuff from the ASQ -or any other US institution, as SixSigma after all was invented there -and NOT in Germany, where people obviously are quite unhappy about it -to the degree that they even try to ridicule and disrepute it. Anyways, I just ran out of toilet paper -I'm going to use your 'certificate', em mockery, for it. And yes, I am a Black Belt trained by probably the best Master Black Belts out there and ...: I don't have to play Lotto -I am Lotto, Mrs. 0tt. And your and the TUM, particularly this mooc are, rather bad jokes. Get your moocs out of EDX, please. "
(provided this comment on that mooc's discussion board)
For providing such a mooc they (the TMU) came across quite arrogant. I consider that mooc as even toxic for beginners as you definitely learn the wrong stuff here. You get a a superficial survey of the main points here, in fact so superficial that it becomes dangerous.
You wanna know SixSigma, the DMAIC cycle, root cause analysis, ANOVA etc ethttps://www.class-central.com/review/new/3310#c -go anywhere but stay away from that one.
