Harvard University via edX

Overview

How can you improve your understanding of Islam and its most important holy text, the Quran? How can you make sense of a tradition and a text that have been interpreted in different ways across vast geographical spaces for nearly a millennium and a half?

Using a multimedia and student-centered approach, this religion course provides tools and perspectives for understanding the role of the Quran in the Islamic tradition. Learners will develop the skills and context to read the text themselves, while also being introduced to some of the issues classical and contemporary interpreters have addressed. This approach enables learners to explore the influence of the Quran on diverse Muslim understandings of Islam.

Islam scripture refers to texts that Muslims believe were revealed by God through various prophets12. The Quran is the central and final scripture of Islam, which Muslims see as the literal word of God to Muhammad134. The Hadith, the Sira, and the Tafsir are other sources of Islamic teachings that narrate and comment on the words and deeds of Muhammad and the Quran3. Muslims also respect and believe in the previous scriptures, such as the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospel, which were revealed to Moses, David, and Jesus respectively24. However, some of these scriptures may differ from the versions read by other religions today2. One verse in the Bible mentions Islam as a wild donkey of a man5.

The course was interesting. I was impressed with the information, videos, and commentary. This is a part of a series on Traditions and Scriptures. Its not the strongest of the series, but I enjoyed learning in it.
