Terrorism and Counterterrorism

Georgetown University via edX

Overview

Terrorism has gone from a persistent yet marginal security concern to one of the most important security problems of our day. There are few countries that do not suffer from some form of terrorism. Though many attempts at terrorism fail, some groups wage lengthy and bloody campaigns and, in exceptional cases, kill hundreds or even thousands in pursuit of their ends.

This course on terrorism will explore the nuances involved in defining terrorism; the nature of Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Islamic State, and other important groups; the effectiveness of different counterterrorism tools; terrorist recruiting, counterterrorism and the rule of law; the political context in South Asia and the Middle East; and the terrorist use of technology.

This is a very well designed course. It takes up the most important and relevant areas in the field and covers them in a good amount of detail. An excellent collection of reading material (both mandatory and optional) have been provided for each unit and provide the right background with which to understand the lectures. There are also optional lectures and interviews covering current events. The course makes you think, rather than just learn.

Terrorism is a real struggle that we should all be involved in. The first step is to try to understand the scenario, and I think taking this course is a step forward towards understanding this global dilemma.

The course was very bias and oversimplistic: US is good / terrorists are bad. The part about Pakistan support for jihadist groups was good.

This course in essential to me because my country Nigeria is also involved. Boko Haram (meaning western education is evil) has been terrorizing (killing, maiming, destroying etc) the norther part of the country. Initially they were against christians and other non-muslims, but now spread to all religions. They have gone to the extent of creating a caliphate.
