Exploring Volcanoes and Their Hazards: Iceland and New Zealand

University of Canterbury via edX

Overview

In this course, you will learn the scientific terminology and skills of a field volcanologist. Unlike most courses, we will be taking you outside of the classroom. These field experiences are where volcanologists get their hands dirty and really learn the tools of the trade.

We will take you on an interactive tour around Icelandic volcanoes where we will be talking to experts on location, digging holes to discover past eruptions, and hearing amazing stories of survival. We will discuss how to better manage volcanic hazards, using examples in New Zealand drawing on Māori knowledge. You will also get to explore rocks and landscapes while navigating around 360° videos and 3D landscapes and rock samples. You will gauge your learning all along the way, building knowledge and skills, and thinking about why volcanoes matter to you.

It was a really complete and enriching course on volcanoes in New Zealand and Iceland with a good presentation of the volcano types and different volcanic features in these countries via an amazing diversity of formats (videos, 3D videos, drawings, rock models, interviews with locals or experts and active exercises). Doing a virtual fieldtrip was a first for me and I really enjoyed this experience!
Thank you very much for this course and this opportunity.

Great Course. Did have some issues with the map not working and being unable to submit. Also had some segments where the audio was aweful or the lesson really did not apply. Just a few tho. I also had one question that was correct but I would not give me the green check mark. flaw in the system I guess

This course was a completely diffferent course for me. It was amazing! If I liked the world of volcanoes before, after attending this lessons I totally love it. I have never experienced before innovative learning tools such as 360 videos of the outcrops, 3D visualizations of rocks, drawing of hazard zones, interviews with experts but also with witnesses of eruptions. All of these elements together made the understanding of volcanoes and its products complete. It was an exciting course, thanks also to the lively participation of Ben Kennedy during his explanations. I am totally satisfied.

    Well done guys!

I completely recommend this course no matter your background level on volcanology! I've found it very interesting and engaging. All the different e-learning tools and activities made the experience so much more fun and it was great to visit all those outcrops in Iceland and New Zealand. The courses cover the basics from the volcano types to hazards and mapping, but it also includes detailed information on how to work as a volcanologist in the field and describe volcanic deposits. Great job!
