Syllabus

  • Week 1: Understanding engineering design
    • Welcome to Fundamental Skills in Engineering Design! The first week of the course will give you a basic understanding of what we mean by 'engineering design', as well as an exploration of the product life cycle. You will learn about the the engineering design process this week too, which is what designers do in order to come up with a new product. This will give you a solid foundation on which to build on in Week 2. Let's get started!
  • Week 2 : Engineering design in practice
    • Welcome to Week 2! This week you will examine some of the soft skills that you will need for a role in engineering design before moving on to look at a case study that will give you the opportunity to think about and practice some of the elements of conceptual design.

    To whom it may concern,
While I believe this is a great course for introducing Engineering design, I am unable to take the Final Assessment due to a message stating that I am not enrolled, even though I am. I reported this as an issue and I hope this is resolved soon, I would hate not to be able to complete the last step of such a wonderful course.
    Thank you,
    Daniel Kirio

I Just completed the course and I am grateful to the instructor(s) for putting this together. This course is useful in laying out the process behind designing a product and the methodology that designers can use and uses in their day to day life.

The course is meant for beginners like me who have little clue into the design life of engineers.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this course.

The course was in details and solutions to the design problems were provided. Week 2 was very interesting too where videos of the solar tracking device was shown. this further made engineering design so much fun to learn. the disadvantages of the 'over the wall' was talked about and soft skills that are important for a good engineer was discussed, including the important attributes of a good team

The "Fundamental Skills in Engineering Design" course provided a solid foundation in understanding how engineering design is approached in real-world scenarios. The structured breakdown of design phases—problem clarification, conceptual design, embodiment design, and detail design—was especially helpful in visualizing the complete product development cycle.

This course provided a simple and easy-to-understand overview of the principles of engineering design. I really enjoyed how it both gave me an introduction to both hard and soft skills, and provided enough information to help me understand where to focus more in order to grow in my work.

I completed the course and found it useful as an introduction to ideas about design in general, engineering in general, and engineering design as a particular field as well. The concepts and methods covered are applicable, I feel, across other practice areas, not just engineering!

As non engineering background learner in f this course, I found it absolutely exciting and very helpful. I can’t wait to take more advanced classes in engineering design to help me achieve my goals.

Simply brilliant, the way this introduction to design has been structured and explained.
I'm an engineering student. I'm required to complete a few engineering design & ethics modules, which I'm going through, right now. This course of Leed University has turned on many lights that help me to better see and understand the mechanics of the engineering design. I like the logical and smooth flow, from the product life cycle, to the design process, to the individual stages within the design process. It's been worth it the time and effort spent. I wish you follow it up with more concrete design courses on both mechanical and electrical & electronics engineering.

    Best regards,
    Jose Joao

I wanted to find out what an engineer actually does and how they come up with the design of their product. This course showed me exactly what I wanted. I have developed a great liking for the course and want to pursue engineering and take more courses in that path. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to become an engineer. Though the math is needed for the designing part, the course was very careful not to go directly into higher math and so anyone with a minimum knowledge of math can certainly take this course. The instructor is very clear and precise in his lectures. Thank you.
