Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, Medicine Grand Rounds - Unconscious Bias: Where are We Now?, 9/18/2020 8:00:00 AM - 9/18/2023 9:00:00 AM, Recognizing the limitations of existing tools to measure unconscious bias and the need to address gaps in our understanding of bias, Dr. Salazar encourages providers to examine where our biases come from and to recognize that they are often incompatible with our conscious values. His strategies for addressing bias in the healthcare workspace include creating a space of safety for patients and to understand that while personal biases may not change, it is important to change your reactions to trigger situations, resulting in healthier encounters with patients and colleagues.

About our Presenter
Dr. René Salazar is the inaugural Assistant Dean for Diversity and Professor of Medical Education and Internal Medicine at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. After residency, Dr. Salazar completed a one-year Latino Health Disparities research fellowship and was a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine at UCSF from 2003 until June 2016.

Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to review the state of the science on unconscious bias and its impact on healthcare and describe 2-3 strategies to minimize the impact of unconscious bias on work.
