Pediatric Grand Rounds (RECORDING) The Long and Winding Road: Steps Towards 3D Printing a Heart

Stanford University via Independent

Overview

Stanford Center for Continuing Medical Education, Pediatric Grand Rounds (RECORDING) The Long and Winding Road: Steps Towards 3D Printing a Heart, 4/15/2022 12:00:00 AM - 4/15/2023 12:00:00 AM,

This presentation is a recording of a Stanford Pediatric Grand Rounds Session.  World-renowned experts will present the latest research, practice guidelines, and treatment protocols to advance best practices in the care of pediatric patients. These online recordings will provide pediatricians and family physicians with up-to-date clinical information on a wide range of clinical issues encountered in daily pediatric practice.

The biomanufacturing of a living and implantable cardiac biopump could serve as a curative solution for patients with single ventricle disease with Fontan physiology. Energizing the right-sided circulation would require billions of aligned and mature cardiomyocytes and perfused via a pervasive vascular network to supply the necessary oxygen and nutrients. 3D bioprinting is uniquely suited for embedding vascular networks into thick tissue, and is thus unlocking the third dimension of tissue engineering. This session describes recent advances for building vascularized tissues, and highlight a path towards whole organ engineering.
