Health Communication: Strategies for Impact and Success

Stanford University via edX XSeries

Overview

Enhance your ability to facilitate effective communication about health and science, with guidance from Stanford Medicine faculty. Connect and build trust with patients, colleagues, the public, and the media as you gain the communication skills to ensure the dissemination of accurate health information.

In an era of medical misinformation, false data and unsourced recommendations on health are shared wide and fast. Medical practitioners and communication specialists now have an additional responsibility to ensure concise and valid information is readily available, and prevent the dissemination of misleading information.

The Stanford Center for Health Education, a part of Stanford Medicine, recognizes the need for communication that ensures medical facts, rather than falsehoods, spread. The Health Communication: Strategies for Impact and Success XSeries program aims to give you these fundamental skills. Guided by leaders in the field, you’ll learn to effectively communicate health and science information to broad audiences including patients, colleagues, the public, and the media.

The program offers an in-depth look at the health information ecosystem, discussing how news is spread and why false details travel faster than the truth. Over several weeks, you’ll learn to deliver impactful medical and scientific presentations, engage in challenging conversations, and facilitate positive media interaction. The power of improvisation in improving your communication skills will also be explored and practiced in role-play scenarios and sessions. As you gain these practical strategies and techniques, you’ll learn how to build strong relationships across contexts, empowering you to become a trusted source of health information.
