Feedback Loops: Vertical Feedback

University of Michigan via Coursera

Overview

Hierarchies are everywhere. They’re at work. They’re at school. They’re inside our families, teams, and social networks. This second course in the "Feedback Loops" specialization will help you provide meaningful feedback to people both above and below you in a wide range of important organizational (and relational) structures.

Syllabus

  • We're Glad You're Here
    • If you had to create a Feedback Manifesto, what would it include? Would there be any sections on "vertical feedback?" How about on "horizontal feedback"? Are you clear on the difference between those two things? By the end of this week, you will be. You'll also begin to understand the power of giving people the following kind of feedback: "We're glad you're here."
  • Lonely at the Top
    • What sort of pressures and frustrations do the people organizationally above have to deal with? What might you do to show them that you support and appreciate their efforts?
  • More Valuable Than Money
    • How can feedback help with the pernicious effects of impostor syndrome? And what might be the benefits of sharing positive feedback about someone not just with the particular person but with their families?
  • Going Negative
    • Under what circumstances—and to which audiences—can negative feedback be helpful, even preferred?
