Overview

Navigating through the complexities of Gender & Sexuality is a necessity in our world, now more than ever. Engage with globally renowned scholars from top Canadian universities to learn concepts and practices that advance respect and human rights. This course will teach you to better understand and apply knowledge about gender and sexuality -- a critical first step in addressing social, economic and cultural inequalities.

This intersectional approach to Gender & Sexuality Studies will cover key topics in the fields of literature, language, geography, history, political science, sociology, anthropology, cinema and media studies, law and medicine. Some questions we will address include:
  • What is gender and sexuality?
  • What does this mean in different contexts?
  • How do we think critically and creatively about identity, communication, and community?
  • How are gender and sexuality organized in media and popular culture?
  • How do people, young and old, negotiate knowledge about gender and sexuality?
This course is for anyone who wants to build their own cultural competence and the capacity of those around them to understand gender and sexuality and the intersections of these core facets of culture and nature, with other differences, like race, age or disability.

This is one of the best courses that I have ever taken.

The course lasts 6 weeks, looking at gender and sexuality from an intersectional lens, and exploring it through different dimensions such as historical narratives, representation in pop culture, health equity, legal rights, and creating an inclusive environment. The videos are well-made and the instructors introduced the concepts very well. One of the marvelous things about the course is that course participants actually have to create action plans so that course participants can link the concepts they have learned to the real changes that they want to implement.

Overall, I would recommend this course as a perfect introduction to anyone who want to learn about gender and sexuality and who wants to be a good ally.

Great course- gave me some really helpful insights into how best to apply pressure for social justice in a complex world stacked against the whole range of minority groups- especially those at their intersections. Nicely engaging and entertaining whilst being informative with lots of video talks from interesting speakers and regular explanations of key issues from Janice.

The discussion boards, with their respectful and informative contributions from learners from across the globe and with regular input from the course tutors, were a particular highlight for me! Far more fun than Facebook!

Many thanks to those who thoughtfully put this course together, to the presenters of the talks and especially to those enthusiastic participants who generously shared their own lived experience.

The course is very-well structured. I thought I already knew a lot about the topic, but no! The course covered things that I may have actually overlooked. I also like Janice's no-nonsense approach, as well as the clarity in how she delivers her lectures. The guest speakers are also experts in the topics that they were assigned to discuss. At first I never thought I'd finish the course because of demanding schedule, but it was so interesting and an excellent learning experience. I wish to teach again at a university, and I know that the things that I have learned in this course are very valuable as I share them to the academe – admin, faculty and students. Thank you so much, Janice and company. Keep it up! :)

The course was fantastic, well structured and easily accessible. Unfortunately I thought I was able to submit the final assignment before February 20 but alas it was February 14 at 9am, I missed my moment by a few hours.

My progress shows that I have a 68% which will still allow my a certificate but feels a little unsatisfactory to have such a modest grade.

Alas, it will not stop me from taking another class, I will be more conscious of the timeline and I hope edX can maybe make the timeline a bit more clear as to avoid this same situation for others.

Regardless, I really appreciate the opportunity to participate.

Thank you and looking forward to my certificate.

good class, introductory info. probably more useful for older generations who are not the driving force of the gender revolution. instructor was knowledgeable and wise. not too much coursework.

This was an incredibly well thought out course that went deep and wide. An amazing accomplishment considering the range of topics and the short time to cover them. The range and quality of the guest speakers was unlike anything that I have seen in class or with an online course and I am grateful for the care and attention used in selecting speakers as well as their individual contributions.

I was disappointed that I could never really "catch up" as I started late and had a number of registration and technical issues or restrictions that prevented me from being eligible for a certi…

This course has been very interesting. It is a good introduction to the topics of sex, gender and sexuality and how they are applied in society. The only thing I missed was more references of academic origin. While I understand that the course aims are to reach as many people as possible, as a scholar I believe it is important to provide several key academic references to support the ideas offered in the course. This is because this course challenges the very air we breathe. Sex, gender and sexuality are thought of as a given, as things that always work the same way and those who take this cou…

This course has be very interesting, engaging and inspiring! Joining with people from all over the world has been exciting, hearing what is happening in their communities, joining in on discussions has been so useful in the overall learning journey this MOOC takes us on. The speakers are all so interesting to listen to, and Dr Janet Stewart is an engaging Course Instructor. The MOOC is easy to follow, and I found it simple to go back and forth to review what we had already completed. The course has been developed with ease of use in mind. I moved from my computer to my iPhone and iPad at different times allowing me to access the course wherever and when ever I had time to. I highly recommend this course, you won’t be dissapointed.

This is a fantastic course and I truly believe that ideally everyone, everywhere should take it at some point in their lives! It is such an eye opener in the way it makes clear the extent to which gender and sexuality are intertwined in society on so many different levels but also provides ways of seeing how individuals can support each other and create a more inclusive society moving forward. The way the course has been put together is really outstanding, with videos that are to the point and rich in content and never feel too long or boring. Even the assignments are brilliant in that they have been thought out so that they can be transferred to the real world to start initiating change!

This is my first course through edX or through UBC. I didn’t know what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed the class. I came in knowing very little about the subject. I feel I have a very good base level knowledge of issues to do with sex and gender now. I was pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful and interesting the discussions were with others also taking the class. I loved learning about other people’s experiences all over the world. I would definitely recommend this same class and professor. For me the time needed to complete assignments and reading was a few hours a week which could be broken up. The format of the class worked well for me.

This course was a rare opportunity to come up to date on the evolving conversations and atruggles around gender and sexuality in a safe, respectful space.

Staff and resource people were rxcellent, the course was well organized, breif enough to take on, but contexted well in terms of history, interpretations cultural and legal and health implications of the way people view one another, and how power structures actually work. Few conversations about rights and recognition are so well contexted.

Highly recommended, and much appreciated.

I found out very recently that I am interested in feminism and LGTQ+ community. Through research i found out about the course.

It was really surprising how helpful this course has been for me, not only as a researcher and student but also as an individual. It made me think and critisize things in my life i never though about and this is the most important for me. The videos were so helpful and i believe that the whole course and its information were very organized. Thank you very much for your nice work and the experience.

This course was an enriching experience, as a great journey where I could discover in a pleasant way tools for change, listening to different perspectives I discovered a new world that definitely changed my previous assumptions in a positive and human way about gender, sexuality, inclusion and equity .

It was also very interesting because it allowed me to meet different experiences of people from other countries, and the discussions were very respectful and of quality.

It was an interesting course, the only problem was at the end and all the confusion with the submitting dates for the second assignment. For the first one we had two weeks to complete it but for the last module we had less opportunity, considering time, to complete it and to submit the second assignment.

I send a comment hoping that we have the chance to upload it tomorrow, we are several people in the same situation.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for this course. I found it to be really interesting, thought provoking and not only has it opened my mind to viewing the world through another lens, it has also given me the language to start and/or take part in important conversations on gender and sexuality with those around me. I've been talking about this course so much that I think I have a few more colleagues that are now interested in taking it.

Excellent content! The discussions and videos really help you think deeply about topics related to gender and sexuality. Many of the articles at the end of each module provide further information and can help you throughly delve into a topic. I am thinking about so many issues I hadn't before, like the decriminalization of sex work, health disparity for LGBTQ2S individuals and gender as a whole. Thank you!

I was interested for two reasons. One, gender, sex and sexuality issues are so prominent in the news these days, I really wasn’t informed about the issues, who is impacted and how, and why it matters. Two, I’m interested in life 100 years ago and really appreciated the history unit. It anything I’d like to have more history as part of this course or even as a completely separate course.

The course provided a great overview of the topic. It introduced different aspects/relevant issues every week and provided several different perspectives particularly from those with lived experience. The activities were relevant and though provoking and provided opportunities to share and hear from others which was also enlightening and useful.

I look forward to other courses on the topic.
