Product Management Fundamentals

Overview

Product management is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative jobs available today. Companies have awoken to the desperate need for product managers to create products that customers love, that integrate design, functionality, and business solutions. In our course, we define the fundamentals of product management and why this role is so coveted as a launch pad for future CEOs and startup founders.

To be effective, product managers need a clear understanding of their jobs and duties. They also need a clear understanding of the required skills and competencies. An appreciation of these roles, responsibilities, skills, and capabilities is also beneficial for stakeholders and team members who collaborate with product managers.

This course investigates the framework for success in product management by defining the product manager’s position in an organization and the key responsibilities. We will examine the skills and competencies most critical to carrying out those responsibilities. To further improve your understanding of product management, we will discuss how product managers engage with the product team and stakeholders to create and manage successful products.

Product managers must also know how to establish, organize, and lead a team. They must know the typical product development life cycle and be able to select the right development methodology for the product and the target market. To meet these challenges to product team leadership, we will consider the phases of product development and the roles that product managers play in each step. We’ll examine a variety of team structures and product development methodologies, and the importance of establishing a team charter. Lastly, we will also explore the opportunities and challenges of market development and commercialization. We’ll provide an orientation to key marketing concepts critical to developing and commercializing innovative products and services.

It was quite a comprehensive introduction into the product management space, well structured to touch on all aspects without overloading you with information. It did a great job highlighting the difference in the roles of a project manager, product manager and a program manager. Lots of pertinent information towards giving you a clear understanding of the mindset of an entrepreneur when it comes to startups in the business world and how to successfully approach that.

All in all, a great introductory course to improve knowledge about the role of a product manager and the tools to succeed in that role.

I recently felt the need to re-ground myself in the foundations of product management. I've been doing it a while, and a lot has changed (especially the shift to Lean methodologies). This course was really quite solid. It definitely re-grounded me,...

Really happy with the course content and delivery. Very clear and engaging. I have been practicing some aspects of product management but in a less formal way as a self employed person. It was great to be able to see that what I was doing, has a structured way of getting done and in some cases even a technical name. I have completed the course confident in my job search in product owner/ product manager roles as I realise that my experience is very relevant to those jobs and the course has given me the confidence and boost I need to really gear up my job search and know that I will be an asset to my next employment. Thank you University of Maryland.

the product management fundamentals course was more interesting as I have gained more knowledge on how the product manager works, project manager works and IT manager that they work hand in hand as the main purpose is to find solution that suite all the client . even though it is not easy to make all clients happy however at the end of the day we must be able to find solutions for our clients and create products that best suitable to them as their core to our businesses. I will be applying all the knowledge that I obtained from this course.

A really nice course to understand building the customer centric product which is building the right product, Product Management overall functioning and understanding in how to do it in the best possible ways with many good product examples. End of the course is the marketing module which has focus on customer development for the product, which is really helpful to define and implement different marketing strategies. Most importantly, the content is crisp and to the point of learning.

What a nice introduction to the Product Manager role.

I´m in a internal promotion to this position and I needed to understand the job itself.

Well focused in giving a wide picture of the role. I loved when they explain that Product Manager are in charge of doing the best product, and do it in the best way.

Althoug than it refers in many examples to start-ups companies, I think it will apply perfectly to any company with the aim of developing innovative solutions in its markets.

Really interesting and not too difficult course to learn about the fundamentals of product management. Both lecturers explained things clearly and were very engaging. I particularly enjoyed learning a few things I hadn't encountered in other education before like the customer development integrating with product development and the marketing and chasm bridging subjects.

It was quite a comprehensive introduction to product management and marketing.

The course was well paced and structured. Short video clips definitely helped. It focused a lot more on start-ups, so if you are working for an established company, this course might not be for you.

Overall - a decent course for anyone new to product management and startup marketing.
