Intermediate French: Working in the French-Speaking World

The Open University via FutureLearn

Overview

Explore the possibilities of working or studying in French-speaking Europe

On this four-week course, you’ll focus on the language needed to help you secure a job or training in French-speaking Europe.

You’ll develop your skills to understand job adverts, CVs, and application letters in French, increasing your knowledge of the vocabulary required to apply for jobs, work placements, or study programmes.

Learn to use the future tense by listening to authentic French speakers

You’ll listen to two French people talk about employment prospects for the younger generation. Analysing this audio, you’ll review the formation of the future tense and its use to express hypotheses and predictions.

You’ll also focus on attitudes to work in France and listen to people explaining whether they are happy in their work and the reasons for this.

Examine work culture in French-speaking Europe

Using a case study about cross-border working, you’ll compare the work cultures of France and neighbouring French-speaking countries, Belgium and Switzerland - countries with plurilingual and multicultural working environments.

Finally, you’ll explore how you can improve your language skills further, uncovering the wider benefits of spending time abroad. You’ll think about what you could do on a language trip to France or a French-speaking country and consider the advantages and disadvantages of studying or working there.

By the end of this course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of the opportunities to work and train in French-speaking Europe. You’ll also have developed your ability to understand authentic spoken French and become more familiar with features of French pronunciation, helping you improve your own spoken French in a range of contexts.

This course is designed for those who are at Level A2, working towards Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Learners should feel confident to use the language in most situations likely to arise while travelling in French-speaking countries.

The OU’s language ExpertTracks are designed to help you progress with each one you study.

Learners would benefit from having completed Intermediate French: La Francophonie (People, Places and Events) before taking this ExpertTrack.
