Working with Motion & Time

School of Visual Arts via Kadenze

The first course in the Photographer to Video in Today's Gig Economy program, Working with Motion & Time, is a deep dive from photography to videography, and shows you how to think in motion. Many of the core concepts carried over from still photography are the same, but putting your camera and scene in motion opens up a new world of possibilities and demands. You will learn how to add motion where there is none, and to control focus, light and sound.

  • The Documentary Project
    • In this session, we'll gain experience in hands-on practice with filming interview and b-roll shots, combined with seeing how motion, sound, and lighting come together to create a unique experience for a viewer.
  • From Still Photographer to Videographer
    • In this session, we'll go through the importance of photographers incorporating motion into their skillset, and the essential steps towards rethinking their creative process to create videos.
  • Recording and Seeing in Motion
    • In this session, we'll learn the basics of recording video and how the different types of motion, both of the camera and subject, create meaning, mood and purpose. We'll also see how those factors contribute to how a director wants viewers to experience and understand a story.
  • Managing Focus, Light and Sound
    • In this session, we'll grasp the special significance that audio, light and focus have in a motion environment, and how the success of a video project can solely depend on variables of the previously mentioned factors.
  • Motion Methods

I did this for a friend. I really liked the course! Turns out, I was the guinea pig in my friend group on this... Man, that was rough.
