Overview

Based on the most popular open online course in the world, this course gives you easy access to the learning techniques used by experts in art, music, literature, math, science, sports, and many other disciplines. No matter what your current skill level, using these approaches can help you master new topics, change your thinking and improve your life.
This course explains:

* Why sometimes letting your mind wander is an important part of the learning process
* How to avoid "rut think" in order to think outside the box
* The value of metaphors in developing understanding
* A simple, yet powerful, way to stop procrastinating

If you’re already an expert, these strategies will turbocharge your learning, including test-taking tips and insights that will help you make the best use of your time on homework and problem sets.

We all have the tools to learn what might not seem to come naturally to us at first—the secret is to understand how the brain works so we can unlock its power.

Filled with animations, application questions, and exercises, this course makes learning easy and fun!

Syllabus

What is Learning?
-In this module, we'll use metaphor and analogy to help you more easily understand key ideas about how your brain works. You will discover two modes of thinking—you can use these modes in different ways to improve your learning. We will also show you a powerful tool for tackling procrastination, give you some great memory tips, and point out why "sleeping on it" can be a good idea!

Tips to Build Your Memory
-In this module, we explore the brain’s process for storing information in long-term memory in an easy to understand metaphor involving a school bag, a locker and an octopus. Then, we will talk about some of the best ways to access your brain’s most powerful long-term memory systems, like metaphor, recall, memory palace and rhyming.

Brain Links and Study Tips
-In this module, we’re going to talk more about important ideas and techniques that will enhance your ability to learn. You’ll also discover how to avoid “information overload,” and how to recognize your own strengths. Fighter pilots and surgeons use checklists to help them with their critical duties—you can use a similar checklist to help you prepare for tests. Ultimately, you will learn more about the joys of living a life filled with learning!

This is a great course. I am a high school teacher and have completed the adult version of this course twice. I am recommending this new course to my students. It is certainly pitched at the right level for high school students and is equally interesting for adults. Well done. From a teaching point of view it certainly provides acknowledgement that many of the "traditional" approaches to teaching are beneficial for growing brain-links. I think it is so exciting to have some knowledge of how our brain works. I think this knowledge can set up our students for a greater sense of control in both their academic and personal lives.

Oh! and by the way, the best part of doing the adult version is receiving the "Cheery Friday Greetings" email. Thank you.

I've taken the course two times now (although the first time I believe it was just "Learning How to Learn"). The course was basic and could be done relatively quickly.

Pros: Good anecdotes, examples, and analogies that show the applicability of the concepts.

The teaching staff was enthusiastic.

Good quality in videos, diagrams, course setup, etc.

Cons: Nothing really to advance.

I wish I have learned the learning techniques showing in this course when I was younger, so my study would be much easier. However, it is not too late, I will review the course videos a few more times and practice in a daily basic, to make sure I have mastered the techniques. Thank you Professor Barbara Oakley, Professor Terrence Sejnowski, Greg Hammons and Cousera.

This course was very interesting and teaches you a lot about techniques you should try in a test and those are very helpful. This course also teaches you some skills that you might not have learned a school but can come in useful at school and later on in your life. I would strongly recommend this course to my friends and anybody willing to take the time to complete it.

It didn't really teach me any new techniques for studying but it did a very good job explaining why those techniques are useful and important. It moved a little slower than I think it needed to. The information was all easy to comprehend.

This course was introduced by one of my friend. I read her review (in Chinese), and got some feelings. And when a month later, I quit my job and determine to learn something new, I took this course first to help myself get into the learning process which has left me for a decade.

When I really start to take this course, I love it very much. I found Babara、 Terrence as well as Gregory very nice、inspiring and professional. They shared a lot of new knowledge about happily learning, as well as some skills and techniques which I used to have when I was a high school student.

I am very thankful to this course, because it really help me build confidence in learning, and also they nicely instructed me to really focus in learning something. You know, focus, work.not just listen and entertain.

We can entertain ourself after learning. but, first, folks. Go to learn. When you really begin to learn, you’ll find learning more easily and happily.

The course is fine for those who are having trouble with learning or are doing home school. to pass a quiz you need to get 80% or higher, maybe a bit of a let down because it's easy to get through with bit of trial and error, if they did fail they'll just put in the answers like "that sould be correct" and "this should not be correct" is just to easy for people who too stupid that when they fail a test they'll just the correct answers in, unless it's a blind person. also if you put in a answer at wrong spot they'll just fly back and, they must drag and drop into the spot until they get it right, and also, what's the point of making people of "think about the answer that is correct and click the plus to find out" like WHY, What's the point of making them of think about the anwser when they can just click on the plus straight away, i maybe a bit TRIGGERED about the course but still, i had a good time on the "Learning to Learn" course.

Although this is promoted as a somewhat simpler version of the popular MOOC "Learning How To Learn", I found the lectures, and particularly the examples and explanations much easier to understand and apply than those of the more detailed course. The use of all of the instructors in most of the videos instead of only having one in a particular video made the videos more interesting and memorable.

I HIGHLY recommend this course for ANYONE, but especially for ANY student, at any grade level from possibly third grade on up. Also take the original course too, for more details and references. But at a minimum, anyone who wants to learn more effectively should take this course NOW!

I think this course is helpful for adults and children. The course has a lot of short videos with excellent examples and these videos helped me to understand the materials better. The course is teaching strategies which can be used to make learning time more productive. Some of the strategies I started implement already and I can see better outcomes of my own productivity. I found that Pandora technique is especially helpful for me. I will encourage my own children to take this course. I will suggest to my friends to take this course too. The only suggestion I have is make “My Learning Journal” in Word format. Thank you for making this course available to all.

I feel so motivated to learn this course, because I am a slow learner and this course has mentioned every single thing and it really connected to me. Moreover, I have applied these techniques in my study life so I can see there are lots of improvements. Right now I can do some advanced high school math exercise and understand and being able to do chemistry and physics exercise and concept.

Moreover, I am a 21st century learning enthusiast as well, I really want to see changes be made in this discipline so this course has a very deep connection with me. Thanks Dr. Barbara Oakley and Dr. Terry Sejnowski and the team for this.
