Learning How To Learn for Youth

Arizona State University via Coursera

Based on one of the most popular open online courses in the world, this course gives you easy access to the learning techniques used by experts in art, music, literature, math, science, sports, and many other disciplines. No matter what your current skill level, using these approaches can help you master new topics, change your thinking and improve your life.
This course explains:

* Why sometimes letting your mind wander is an important part of the learning process
* How to avoid "rut think" in order to think outside the box
* The value of metaphors in developing understanding
* A simple, yet powerful, way to stop procrastinating

If you’re already an expert, these strategies will turbocharge your learning, including test-taking tips and insights that will help you make the best use of your time on homework and problem sets.

We all have the tools to learn what might not seem to come naturally to us at first—the secret is to understand how the brain works so we can unlock its power.

Filled with animations, application questions, and exercises, this course makes learning easy and fun!

What is Learning?
-In this module, we'll use metaphor and analogy to help you more easily understand key ideas about how your brain works. You will discover two modes of thinking—you can use these modes in different ways to improve your learning. We will also show you a powerful tool for tackling procrastination, give you some great memory tips, and point out why "sleeping on it" can be a good idea!

Tips to Build Your Memory
-In this module, we explore the brain’s process for storing information in long-term memory in an easy to understand metaphor involving a school bag, a locker and an octopus. Then, we will talk about some of the best ways to access your brain’s most powerful long-term memory systems, like metaphor, recall, memory palace and rhyming.

Brain Links and Study Tips
-In this module, we’re going to talk more about important ideas and techniques that will enhance your ability to learn. You’ll also discover how to avoid “information overload,” and how to recognize your own strengths. Fighter pilots and surgeons use checklists to help them with their critical duties—you can use a similar checklist to help you prepare for tests. Ultimately, you will learn more about the joys of living a life filled with learning!

In my point of view, this course is helpful for everyone, no matter in which stage or phase of learning journey we are, it is going to be helpful for school students, college students, teachers, mentors, and experts. Further, by consideration of lifelong learning, everyone needs some basic skills which were presented in the current course. Therefore, I strongly recommend the course to everyone whom are passion of learning and teaching, particularly pre-primary and primary school teachers, since the can share and practice the tips and skills with their students in their beginning of learning journeys.

As a teacher it has open a new approach to helping my students and encouraging them to take the course and apply it. I have also suggested the book to my coordinator and hopefully we will use it. Reviews are still pending.
I thank you all for the opportunity of taking this course and encouraging students all over that they can improve. I too had a hard time in school when I was very young and I think it is extremely important that we learn not only subjects and information, but actually how our brain works and how it can work better.
    Thanks again.

I've taken the course two times now (although the first time I believe it was just "Learning How to Learn"). The course was basic and could be done relatively quickly.

Pros: Good anecdotes, examples, and analogies that show the applicability of the concepts.
    The teaching staff was enthusiastic.
Good quality in videos, diagrams, course setup, etc.

    Cons: Nothing really to advance.

Well, I am a hard reviewer that not every good thing make me review but guess what.
I did take that course for a reason which is to develop a skill that would help me to learn more and so become a successful person. My expectation was a decent course with so much to remember and study and the reality is... no.. The course is so awesome, powerful and simplified with metaphors, nice animations and easy teaching techniques that made not only make it hard to forget but so entertaining and so well made.

This is a great course. I am a graduate from India. I am recommending this course to my friends. It is certainly pitched at the right level for me. Well done and thank you. From a learning point of view, it certainly provides acknowledgement that many of the "traditional" approaches to learn are beneficial for growing brain-links. I think it is so exciting to have some knowledge of how our brain works. I think this knowledge can set up for a greater sense of control in both their academic and personal lives.

I wish I have learned the learning techniques showing in this course when I was younger, so my study would be much easier. However, it is not too late, I will review the course videos a few more times and practice in a daily basic, to make sure I have mastered the techniques. Thank you Professor Barbara Oakley, Professor Terrence Sejnowski, Greg Hammons and Cousera.

This course was very interesting and teaches you a lot about techniques you should try in a test and those are very helpful. This course also teaches you some skills that you might not have learned a school but can come in useful at school and later on in your life. I would strongly recommend this course to my friends and anybody willing to take the time to complete it.

It didn't really teach me any new techniques for studying but it did a very good job explaining why those techniques are useful and important. It moved a little slower than I think it needed to. The information was all easy to comprehend.
