SWATCHHATA CAMPUS- CLEAN, GREEN AND SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY

NITTTR via Swayam

Overview

Every Educational Institution should implement Environmental Initiatives for achieving Ideal Educational Environment. A Green Campus is a place where environmentally friendly practices and education combine to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the campus. The Green Campus, Energy and Environment Policies will develop exciting new co-curricular and extracurricular practices that encourage students to take the lead in creating positive change. These initiatives call for a thorough review of all infrastructural, administrative functions from the standpoints of energy efficiency, sustainability and the environment. The green campus concept offers an institution, the opportunity to take the lead in redefining its environmental culture and developing new paradigms by creating sustainable solutions to environmental, social and economic needs of the mankind. Greening the campus is all about sweeping away wasteful inefficiencies and using conventional sources of energies for its daily power needs, correct disposal handling, purchase of environment friendly supplies and effective recycling program. Green campus landscapes also manage runoff, help recharge groundwater, and clean and cool the air on campus. The landscape serves as a visual representation of the campus community’s commitment to sustainability. As campus landscapes are so visible and accessible, landscaping initiatives are a great way to build awareness around the environment. Institutions have to work out the time bound strategies to implement green campus initiatives. These strategies need to be incorporated into the institutional planning and budgeting processes with the aim of developing a clean and green campus. The initiatives include sufficient levels of Greenery, Integration of Sustainable Development concepts in their Curricula, Plastic Free Campus, Noise and Air Pollution Prevention and Rain Water Harvesting. Generating mass awareness on cleanliness and hygiene amongst students and staff members by holding regular cleanliness drives. Institutions should commit to install environment-friendly electrical appliances that save energy and reduce wasteful inefficiencies. A green audit is a useful tool to determine how and where most energy or water or resources are being used. Sustainable construction means using renewable and recyclable materials when building new structures, as well as reducing energy consumption and waste. The primary goal of sustainable construction is to reduce the industry’s impact on the environment. Activities under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ will be a key component of all the community work being done by NSS, NCC and Green Society volunteers of the Institutions. The objective of this module Clean, Green and Sustainable Technology is to Conserve Natural Resources, Optimize Energy Efficiency, Implement Sustainable Construction, Manage Waste and Health & Safety in the Campus.
