Technical Report Writing for Engineers

The University of Sheffield via FutureLearn

Learn to communicate effectively through technical report writing

Technical reports are a vital tool for engineers to communicate their ideas. This online course introduces technical report writing and teaches the techniques you need to construct well-written engineering reports.

Each week, we’ll look at a key section of a technical report and the skills needed to write it. You’ll cover areas such as referencing and citations; presenting equations; diagrams and data; and using language and tenses correctly.

We’ll also talk to practising engineers, as well as students and educators who write and mark technical reports, who’ll give their hands-on advice.

This course is designed for both student and professional engineers. It will teach you the technical report writing skills you need to tackle everything from a two-page document to a PhD thesis. As such, it will be applicable for the entirety of your engineering degree or career.

For myself an engineer working in an engineering organization, this was an excellent refresher. It is far to easy to forget what generally required in a report especially if the organization has it's own operating procedures that provide guidance on how the organization expects reports to be written and various sections are never required (i.e. a short form report ).

The input from the various industry participants was very informative and it would be valuable if some more examples of bad reports with appropriate comments were provided.

It would be beneficial if there was a segment on when to use and the contents of Annex , Appendix and enclosures (I have seen reports with all three).

I found the course very enlightening. A very easy-to-follow course with what to do and most importantly, what not to do. Emphasis was placed on being concise in language and especially factual in content even when making a conjecture. I also found the videos by the engineers in the industry very useful. The comment section was like staying in for optional tuition from peers and teaching assistants, as such, created a milieu to share and compare. This is my first online course and it has been a great defining experience.

The six weeks course has been very interesting, constructive, some parts a bit complicated (technical language) remembering equations, mathematics, arithmetic and others! Everything learned is what I was looking for and needed to understand some technical parts of the technical report of the Engineers. I hope to apply it soon in my work in the Automotive sector.
