Civil engineering is a broad field of engineering that deals with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of structures and systems related to the built environment. Water and waste water engineering is a subfield of civil engineering that focuses on the management and treatment of water and wastewater.

The goal of water and wastewater engineering is to ensure the safe and efficient management of water resources, from protecting water sources from pollution to providing safe and effective waste water treatment systems. The most important part of water and wastewater engineering is the understanding of the laws that govern water and the processes necessary for its treatment and management.
The most
important part of water and wastewater engineering is the design of systems that can collect, store, and treat water and wastewater. This includes designing pipelines, pumps, and other infrastructure for the collection and distribution of water, as well as wastewater treatment plants and systems. Water and wastewater engineers must also be familiar with storm water management systems, such as detention ponds and other measures to reduce storm water runoff and protect water resources.

In addition to designing these systems, water and wastewater engineers must ensure that they are constructed properly and are operated and maintained efficiently. This includes monitoring and evaluating the performance of systems and making necessary improvements.
