10 Best Ukulele Courses for 2024: Strumming and Fingerpicking

Learn the ukulele online with our selection of courses covering various aspects for kids and adults, how to practice, fingerpicking and chords, and baritone ukulele.

So, isn’t the ukulele just a tiny, high-pitched guitar? Well, no. Four strings instead of six and a softer string action are just two of the differences. Because of these factors, many people consider the ukulele to be easier to play and a better starting instrument, particularly for children.

“Easier to play” doesn’t mean that anyone can pick up a ukulele and instantly start making beautiful music. As with other instruments, taking lessons and practice are big factors. As I said in the Best Courses Guide (BCG) for guitar, getting feedback from a teacher is particularly helpful. But if money or distance prevent this, the courses in this BCG are ideal for learning the ukulele and having fun along the way.

I combed the Class Central catalog to identify the top online ukulele courses from several providers. Are you a complete beginner, or maybe you already know the basics and want to learn more chords or improve your fingerpicking? Do you want to know the best class for kids, or are you interested in the baritone ukulele? I checked courses and collated ratings and reviews to narrow down the best choices from over 60 ukulele courses in the catalog. Many of the instructors have years of performing and teaching experience, or have formal music qualifications.

Why You Should Trust Us

Class Central, a Tripadvisor for online education, has helped 60 million learners find their next course. We’ve been combing through online education for more than a decade to aggregate a catalog of 200,000 online courses and 200,000 reviews written by our users. And we’re online learners ourselves: combined, the Class Central team has completed over 400 online courses, including online degrees. I’ve personally completed over 150 online courses in a variety of topics including ukulele.

How We Made Our Picks and Tested Them

Trying to find “the best” can be daunting, even for those of us who live and breathe online courses. Here’s how I approached this task.

First, I combed through Class Central’s Catalog and the internet to find a variety of free and paid open courses, some with certificates. You don’t need private lessons to start learning the ukulele.

When choosing courses, I considered the following factors:

  • Instructor experience: I sought instructors with extensive experience in teaching the ukulele and engaging presentation styles
  • Popularity: I checked numbers of enrollments and views to find popular courses
  • Course content: I examined courses that covered a range of topics and presentation styles, including the basics and more advanced topics. I watched some course videos to sample courses
  • Learner reviews: I read learner reviews (when available) to get a sense of the quality of each course, leveraging the Class Central database with its thousands of course ratings and reviews written by our users as well as available course provider reviews.
  • Then, I defined the scope for these recommendations. A ukulele course can cover various topics and playing styles, so I chose top courses from a range of sub-fields.

Ultimately, I used a combination of data and my own judgment to make these picks. I’m confident these recommendations will be a reliable way to learn the ukulele.

My library provides free access to ArtistWorks, which offers ukelele lessons at https://artistworks.com/ukulele-lessons-craig-sarah . But it’s really more fun to learn in-person! Some music stores offer really affordable group lessons.
