Ethics of AI

University of Helsinki via Independent

Overview

Welcome to the Ethics of AI!

The Ethics of AI is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki. The course is for anyone who is interested in the ethical aspects of AI – we want to encourage people to learn what AI ethics means, what can and can’t be done to develop AI in an ethically sustainable way, and how to start thinking about AI from an ethical point of view.

In this course you'll...

  • Discover why AI raises concerns about its ethically acceptable use and development.
  • Become familiar with the ethical questions and concepts related to contemporary AI.
  • Learn how to combine ethical concepts and theories with AI by doing practical exercises.

AI is becoming ever more relevant

Artificial intelligence is already a part of our daily lives. When we post pictures to social media, search online or ask questions from chatbots, we’re interacting with AI. Authorities, such as cities, rely on AI for providing public services. And governments are seeking solutions to global problems by using algorithmically produced knowledge. The goal of this course is to help you to develop your own skills for ethical thinking. You can complete the course at your own pace.

This course involves you reading about ethics and understanding how ethics relates to the use of Artificial Intelligence. It also gives you an opportunity to review other people's responses who have undertaken the course. The reading is not difficult and broken down into 7 chapters while the reviews and certification depends on peer reviews where your responses to the question are graded based on other people's reviews. Overall, this course is useful and I would recommend it to those who would like to understand the background of AI and how ethics can tie in with the use of AI.

(*There was no certificate upon completion) This was a great course. I am passionate about the subject and they used real-life situations to teach the material. I would highly suggest this course to anyone interested in AI. One criticism I have is that some of your questions are graded by peers and there were several times I was given bad grades for no reason other than the peer was malicious. One comment by a peer was “hehehe” after giving me a bad grade. Another had something similar. Luckily most peers grade fairly. Despite this one flaw I would definitely recommend the course and I have already started another AI course from Helsinki University.
