Renewable Energy Microgrid: Integrating Green Hydrogen

Deakin University via FutureLearn Program

Overview

With fossil fuel prices soaring and global temperatures rising, the need to find cleaner and cheaper energy sources has never been more urgent. Promising for long-term sustainability and locally-administered means of harnessing renewable energy, microgrids offer a combined solution to energy poverty and global warming.

Developed as part of a series by Deakin University on renewable energy microgrids, this microcredential focuses on the potential of green hydrogen. You’ll learn how green hydrogen can be integrated into microgrid systems and what potential this has for the clean energy transition.

Learn how green hydrogen is produced, stored, and distributed

International organisations and governments around the world have thrown their support behind green hydrogen as a renewable energy source. A clean, storable, and versatile fuel, hydrogen has a crucial role to play in the global energy transition.

You’ll start the course with an introduction to topics and trends in green hydrogen production. You’ll learn how green hydrogen is produced, stored, and distributed, as well as exploring some of the uses and applications of the fuel for industrial and household use.

Weigh up the costs and benefits of green hydrogen microgrids

Throughout the course, you’ll review the benefits of green hydrogen as a fossil fuel replacement, while also considering its disadvantages.

You’ll analyse the cost of implementing green hydrogen microgrids, and the challenges involved in integrating them with the existing energy market.

Discover the potential of green hydrogen for energy security and sustainability

Your overarching focus throughout this course will be on green hydrogen’s potential as an alternative to fossil fuels. You’ll investigate the various benefits of hydrogen for improving energy security and sustainability, while building resilience in future energy systems.

By the end of the course, you’ll have an in-depth understanding of how green hydrogen can be integrated into renewable microgrid systems, and the skills you need to unlock careers in sustainability and climate action.

How will this microcredential help in my career?

This microcredential will equip you with transferable skills and professional knowledge that you can apply to a wide range of green careers. You’ll discover the science and technology involved in green hydrogen production, and learn how to plan, design, and evaluate renewable energy microgrids. With this knowledge, you’ll be able to access jobs in engineering, project management, policy, consulting, and more.

In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to network and engage with other professionals working in the renewable energy industry. Whether you’re looking to explore new positions or to evolve in your current career, this microcredential will empower you to take the next step professionally.

You may also be interested in the Renewable Energy Microgrid: Market and Policy microcredential where you will explore how green energy alternatives are disrupting and changing traditional markets.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of this course, you’ll carry out a case study analysis of a new hydrogen project. The case study focuses on the design, technical and economic feasibility, and environmental impact of integrating a green hydrogen system into an existing renewable energy microgrid.

Will I receive university credits?

Upon successful completion of the written assessment, you’ll be awarded 0.5 postgraduate level credits from Deakin University, and a Credly digital badge. You can build up your credits by completing more of the microcredentials offered by Deakin University.
