Overview

Do you struggle with finding the right colors for your paintings? Are you confused by why your colors might be dull or just not quite right compared to what you were looking for? Does color just scare you outright?

In this class we're going to take a deep dive into color mixing and creative color collecting! :) I'm going to share with you my deep love of color, break down the complex underpinnings of color theory so that you can have a simple grasp of how it all works, teach you techniques to complexify your use of color when you're painting, help increase your confidence with color mixing, and give you a bunch of fun creative prompts to push your color collecting adventure even further!

Join me and create your own color collecting adventure by finding the parts of this class that you find inspiring! The class is built in two parts:

  • In the first part, you'll be honing your hands-on color mixing skills & techniques, collecting color swatches and color wheels, deep-diving into color theory, finding subtle hues, mixing complementary grays & neutrals as well as a beautiful variety of skin tones. You'll be training your eyes and hands to find the colors you're looking for, and maybe some you hadn't thought of before! :)
  • In the second part, you'll be embarking on a creative color collecting adventure, building on the knowledge gained in the first part of the class and using a variety of color palettes. I've come up with  a bunch of creative prompts for you centered around color and playfulness, so you can transform your sketchbook into a colorful playground, challenge yourself, broaden your horizons and find your color language. The keywords for this part are exploration, experimentation, adventurin' and color collectin'!

You can go through this class chronologically, gaining all the technical knowledge and then diving into the creative prompts OR you can move from the technical part to the creative part and back. Feel free to do as many or as few exercises as you feel inspired to do. :)

If your knowledge of color mixing is solid, then feel free to jump right into the second part of the class, to create a collection of different gouache paintings using specific color schemes and creative prompts.

There are SO MANY possibilities for us to keep honing our personal artistic expression and I can't wait to see the work that you do and the paintings you create! :)

Color is one of my favorite subjects, not least because of how vast & beautiful it is, and I hope you'll discover you love it as much as I do. There are SO MANY possibilities for us to keep honing our personal artistic expression and I can't wait to see the work that you do and the paintings you create!

Please share what you make in the project section! If you decide to share on Instagram, use the hashtag #skillsharecolorcollector so we can all share in a smorgasbord of colorful delight (haha is that too much? I just had to put in the word 'smorgasbord' because it's the best word ever. Who ever even thought up a word like that??).

Here's my Instagram if you're looking for me, and I can't wait to see you on there, on Skillshare or even on Patreon. :)
