African Polyphony and Polyrhythm

This course aims to explore the principles underlying the musical system of traditional central African polyphony and polyrhythm as described by ethnomusicologist Simha Arom. The learning outcomes include understanding how to model specific musical idioms using general computation principles and executing these models to generate music. The course teaches the use of music-as-code as a representation of Arom's insights. The intended audience for this course is individuals interested in ethnomusicology, computational musicology, and the intersection of music and programming.
