Overview
This course covers the metamorphism of basalt and gabbro, exploring the predictable transitions in mineral assemblages based on pressure and temperature. The learning outcomes include understanding the formation of greenschist, blueschist, amphibolite, granulite, and eclogite facies. Students will learn to identify minerals such as actinolite, chlorite, epidote, albite, sodic amphiboles, garnet, hornblende, and omphacite in different metamorphic settings. The course teaches the skills of mineral identification in thin sections and hand samples, as well as interpreting metamorphic textures. The teaching method involves a detailed explanation of each facies with visual aids such as thin section scans and hand specimen images. This course is intended for geology enthusiasts, students, teachers, and professionals looking to deepen their understanding of metamorphic processes and mineral assemblages in mafic rocks.
