[2024] TOEFL Test Preparation with 100 Online Resources
We’ve collected 100 online resources including courses, videos, practice tests, mobile apps and books to help you prepare for the TOEFL test.
Passing the TOEFL test may be required to study abroad, start a new job in an English-speaking environment, or immigrate to an English-speaking country. More than 12,000 institutions in over 160 countries accept TOEFL scores. It is definitely one of the most popular language tests in the world. An estimated 2.3 million students take the TOEFL each year.
Class Central lists close to 1,400 online courses to learn a new language at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. The vast majority of those online courses teach English and some of them prepare students for standardized English tests, like the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
We researched courses and other resources for preparing for the TOEFL test and compiled the following list of free and paid choices, including online courses, practice websites, mobile apps, YouTube videos, vocabulary flashcards, podcasts, and guide books. But first, let us walk you through some useful information about the TOEFL test.

About the TOEFL Test
TOEFL, the abbreviation of Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a standardized English test for non-native speakers applying for English-speaking universities. TOEFL is designed and organized by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
TOEFL Test Content
You can take the internet-based test 100% online in test centers with customized computers. It has 4 sections including reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A free test practice website is offered by ETS to help students get familiar with the different parts.

Due to the pandemic, ETS announced the availability of the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition to test takers worldwide on April 7, 2020. TOEFL Home Edition has identical content, format and grading method with TOEFL iBT in test centers but with several benefits:
- You can take TOEFL Home Edition on your own computer at home monitored by a human proctor online.
- You can take TOEFL Home Edition 24 hours a day, 4 days a week from Sunday to Wednesday.
You need to carefully check the environment and equipment requirements for taking the home test before booking your test.
TOEFL iBT Paper Edition
Available in Colombia, India, Mexico and the United States, a paper-based test for the Reading, Listening and Writing sections will be rolled out to more countries in the future. Currently, it’s only available in testing centers once or twice per month. The Speaking section must be taken on your home computer within 3 days of the paper-based test. You need to check your environment and equipment requirements for the Speaking Test before booking any part of the test.
TOEFL Scores
Starting in August 2019, ETS announced the addition of MyBest™ scores to TOEFL iBT® score reports, allowing students to combine best scores for each test section from all of their valid TOEFL scores from the past 2 years.
Starting in February 2020, students can view TOEFL iBT® Reading and Listening section scores on screen immediately after completing the online test, as Reading and Listening sections are 100% computer scored. (Not available for paper-based tests.)
