Overview
The course teaches how to calculate the moment of inertia matrix for a rigid body, determine principal moments of inertia and principal axes of rotation, and construct the principal axis frame using MATLAB. The teaching method includes numerical demonstrations with MATLAB examples. The intended audience for this course includes students and professionals interested in space vehicle dynamics, aerospace engineering, rigid body dynamics, and MATLAB applications in engineering.
Syllabus
Rigid body dynamics, continuous mass distribution.
Moment of inertia matrix entries, integral over body.
Principal axis frame -- easiest, most natural, rigid body frame.
Transforming moment of inertia matrix between frames.
MATLAB example of finding principal axis frame.
Principal axes physical significance.
